Aeschines and Athenian politics by Edward Monroe Harris( Book )

16 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 417 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Filling a major gap in scholarship, this is the first full-length study of the Athenian politician Aeschines. Along with Isocrates, Aeschines was one of the most prominent Athenian politicians who advocated friendly ties with the Macedonian king Philip II. Though overshadowed by his famous rival Demosthenes, Aeschines played a key role in the decisive events that marked the rise of Macedonian power in Greece and formed the transition from the Classical to the Hellenistic period. Three long speeches by Aeschines, all delivered in court battles with his opponent Demosthenes, have been preserved
Transitions to empire : essays in Greco-Roman history, 360-146 B.C. in honor of E. Badian( Book )

9 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 360 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the period 360-146 B.C., the Greco-Roman world underwent the transition from independent city states and small regional powers to the large and potent empires of the Hellenistic age. The essays in this volume consider various aspects of this central political transformation. The contributors to the volume are students or close working colleagues of Ernst Badian, perhaps the greatest living authority on the period under discussion. Included in the volume is a complete bibliography of Badian's publications. The broadly based yet coherent theme - the momentous changes in systems of power and authority in the ancient Mediterranean world - makes Transitions to Empire an important contribution to Greco-Roman scholarship and a fitting tribute to a scholar whose work has had such a far-reaching influence on the field of ancient history
Democracy and the rule of law in classical Athens : essays on law, society, and politics by Edward Monroe Harris( Book )

19 editions published between 2006 and 2014 in English and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume brings together essays on Athenian law by Edward M. Harris, who challenges much of the recent scholarship on this topic. Presenting a balanced analysis of the legal system in ancient Athens, Harris stresses the importance of substantive issues and their contribution to our understanding of different types of legal procedures. He combines careful philological analysis with close attention to the political and social contexts of individual statutes. Collectively, the essays in this volume demonstrate the relationship between law and politics, the nature of the economy, the position of women, and the role of the legal system in Athenian society. They also show that the Athenians were more sophisticated in their approach to legal issues than has been assumed in the modern scholarship on this topic

Demosthenes, speeches 20-22 by Demosthenes( Book )

11 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Demosthenes is regarded as the greatest orator of classical antiquity. This volume contains three important speeches from the earliest years of his political career. They offer evidence on Greek moral views, social and economic conditions, political and social ideology, law and legal procedure, and other aspects of Athenian culture
The rule of law in action in democratic Athens by Edward Monroe Harris( Book )

10 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author aims to show how the Athenians attempted to put the ideal of the rule of law into action and to understand the nature of litigation in its democratic context. Recent books about the Athenian courts have focused mainly on Athenian social values, but they have paid less attention to the political ideal of the rule of law and to the procedures the Athenians followed to implement this ideal. This study moves beyond the study of rhetoric and ideology to examine how the law worked in action, both in the community as a whole and in the courts
The documents in the Attic orators : laws and decrees in the public speeches of the Demosthenic corpus by Mirko Canevaro( Book )

6 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this volume, Mirko Canevaro studies the 'state' documents (laws and decrees) preserved in the public speeches of the Demosthenic corpus. These documents purport to be Athenian statutes and, if authentic, provide invaluable information about Athenian history, law, and institutions. Offering a comprehensive account of the presence of the documents in the corpora of the orators and in the manuscript tradition, this volume summarizes previous scholarship and delineates a new methodology for analyzing the documents
