Sex and world peace by Valerie M Hudson( Book )

10 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in English and held by 540 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book unsettles a variety of assumptions in political and security discourse, demonstrating that the security of women is a vital factor in the security of the state and its incidence of conflict and war. The authors compare micro-level gender violence and macro-level state peacefulness in global settings, supporting their findings with detailed analyses and color maps. Harnessing an immense amount of data, they call attention to discrepancies between national laws protecting women and the enforcement of those laws, and they note the adverse effects on state security of abnormal sex ratios favoring males, the practice of polygamy, and inequitable realities in family law, among other gendered aggressions. The authors find that the treatment of women informs human interaction at all levels of society. Their research challenges conventional definitions of security and democracy and shows that the treatment of gender, played out on the world stage, informs the true clash of civilizations. In terms of resolving these injustices, the authors examine top-down and bottom-up approaches to healing wounds of violence against women, as well as ways to rectify inequalities in family law and the lack of parity in decision-making councils. Emphasizing the importance of an R2PW, or state responsibility to protect women, they mount a solid campaign against women's systemic insecurity, which effectively unravels the security of all
Bare branches : the security implications of Asia's surplus male population by Valerie M Hudson( Book )

11 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 533 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"What happens to a society that has too many men? In this book, Valerie Hudson and Andrea den Boer argue that, historically, high male-to-female ratios often trigger domestic and international violence. Most violent crime is committed by young unmarried males who lack stable social bonds. Although there is not always a direct cause-and-effect relationship, these surplus men often play a crucial role in making violence prevalent within society. Governments sometimes respond to this problem by enlisting young surplus males in military campaigns and high-risk public works projects. Countries with high male-to-female ratios also tend to develop authoritarian political systems."--Jacket

Foreign policy analysis : classic and contemporary theory by Valerie M Hudson( Book )

29 editions published between 2006 and 2014 in English and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This succinct yet comprehensive introduction is the first text to gear foreign policy analysis (FPA) theory toward advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Cogently written, clearly organized, and filled with illuminating examples, the second edition has now been thoroughly revised and updated. Beginning with an overview of this broad field of study. Valerie M. Hudson then considers theory and research at multiple levels of analysis, including personality and psychology of foreign policy decision makers, small group dynamics, the organizational process, bureaucratic politics, domestic politics, cultural and societal influences, national attributes, and system-level effects on foreign policy. The author also examines the promise and frustration of theoretical integration in FPA and overviews promising new work by non - North American scholars". -- BACKCOVER
Foreign policy decision-making revisited by Richard C Snyder( Book )

11 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in English and held by 262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This classic work has helped shape the field of international relations and especially influenced scholars interested in how foreign policy is made. At a time when conventional wisdom and traditional approaches are being questioned, and when there is increased interest in the importance of process, the insights of Snyder, Bruck and Sapin have continuing and increased relevance. Prescient in its focus on the effects on foreign policy of individuals and their preconceptions, organizations and their procedures, and cultures and their values, Foreign Policy Decision-Making is of continued relevance for anyone seeking to understand the ways foreign policy is made. Their seminal framework is here complemented by two new chapters examining its influence on generations of scholars, the current state of the field, and areas for future research.--Publisher description
Political psychology and foreign policy by Eric Singer( Book )

6 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What impact does personality have on the formation of policy? How did group dynamics affect decision making in the Cuban missile crisis? What is the relationship between birth order and leader personality? Combining a critical overview of past scholarship with the latest empirical findings and conceptualizations, Political Psychology and Foreign Policy addresses these issues while placing political psychology in the larger theoretical context of international relations, including a postmodern critique. For anyone interested in the interrelationship between cognition, perception, personality, and politics, Political Psychology and Foreign Policy offers intriguing insights into classic foreign policy dilemmas. A wide range of methods, models, and foreign policy actors are represented in the volume. Foreign policy analysis beyond North America( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

North American scholars typically do not hesitate to make pronouncements about foreign policy processes and outcomes in other countries. And despite ample evidence to the contrary, the perception that foreign policy analysis is still largely a North American scholarly enterprise persists. Foreign Policy Analysis Beyond North America challenges this perception, providing a rich overview of work by scholars in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East and also highlighting theoretical and empirical insights that may catalyze new waves of progress in the field.--Provided by publisher
