Annotation Discoveries in sites revealing the ancient cultures of the Near East and Greece have contributed much to a better understanding of the Old Testament. As new finds constantly add new information, this precious evidence has to be (re)evaluated time and again. In this volume members of the Society for Old Testament Study in the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as members of the Oudtestamentisch Werkgezelschap' in the Netherlands and Belgium join forces to undertake this demanding task. Egyptian, Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Neo-Hittite, Aramaic and Greek texts are inspected in order to establish whether or not they are relevant to the understanding of the Hebrew Bible

"The place is too small for us" : the Israelite prophets in recent scholarship by R. P Gordon( Book )

6 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The title of this volume is, of course, taken from 2 Kgs 6:1, where the prophetic group about Elisha point out that their accomodation is too cramped. It seemed an apt comment on the capacity of any proposed volume to house and adequate representation of the work that has recently been done on Israelite prophecy. To this I now have to add the all-too-ironic confession that the so-called pre-classical prophets (including Elisha and his colleagues) could not be accomodated in the present volume. Let no one complain about being misled by the subtitle when the title is so honest ... there are thirty-six items of varying legnth, and they divide almost equally between journal articles and excerpts from volumes (some of thes of composite authorship). Naturally, they represent one individual's selection from within his personal reading, and this itself accounts for only a fraction of the vast scholarly output on the prophets, whether since 1875 or since 1975 ... It will be apparent at several places in the volume that I take with great seriousness the study of Near Eastern (non-Israelite) prophecy as background to the Israelite phenomenon, so that the first short section (The Near Eastern Background") was unavoidable."--Editor's preface

"John Emerton was Regius Professor of Hebrew at Cambridge University from 1968 to 1995 and is a former editor of Vetus Testamentum and its Supplements (1975-97). His work is characterised by profound learning and rigorous argument. He published detailed articles on a wide range of subjects, not only on the Hebrew language but also on biblical texts, Semitic philology and epigraphy, Pentateuchal criticism and other central issues in biblical scholarship, and biographical essays on some modern scholars. The forty-eight essays in this volume have been selected to provide both an overview of Emerton's influential work in all these fields and easier access to some items which are no longer readily available."--

The Aramaic Bible( Book )

12 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Rabbinic Judaism has transmitted Targums of all the books of the Hebrew Canon, with the exception of Daniel and Ezra-Nehemiah, which are themselves partly in Aramaic. Translations of books of the Hebrew Bible into Aramaic for liturgical purposes must have begun before the Christian era, although none transmitted by Rabbinic Judaism can be shown to be that old. The aim of this series is to translate all the traditionally-known Targums into modern English idiom, while respecting the particular and peculiar nature of what these Aramaic translations were originally intended to be. The translators have made use of what they feel to be the best printed editions of the Aramaic Targum in question or have directly consulted the manuscripts. The translation aims at giving a faithful rendering of the Aramaic. The Targums are not of the same kind. They were translated at different times and have more than one interpretive approach to the Hebrew Bible. Targumic deviations from the Hebrew Text are indicated in italics
