In continuing research toward the development of thermally stable polymers based on the boron-tophosphorus bond system, experiments were conducted to find means of improving the thermal stability of linear phosphinoborine (borophane) polymers, and to introduce a variety of boron substituents into the linear and cyclic polymers. An investigation of the boron-to-nitrogen bond system led to two series of polycyclic borazene polymers one directly bonded and the other bonded through oxygen. Screening experiments on themally stable polymers systems based on phosphorus-to-nitrogen, phosphorus-to-oxygen- tosilicon, and carbon-to-oxygen-to-silicon bond systems were conducted

Ammonia or methylamine, reacting with pentaborane(9) during sudden heating at 160-180C., can displace as much as 0.25 B2H6 per B5H9 consumed. The reason for such anomalous behavior, whereby strong molecular bases displace a strong Lewis acid, is to be found in a series of reaction steps whereby the base first disrupts the B5H9 to combine with the B4H6 and BH3 fragments; then the BH3 complex makes the borazane and hydrogen; next the borazane accepts a second BH3 to make a mu-aminodiborane, which finally dissociates into diborane and the borazane trimer, the latter at last going to the corresponding borazine. For all of the mentioned reactions, the B4H6 which include the bases and have high thermal stability

The Al2I6-catalyzed iodination of 4,5-C2B4H8 produces the enantiomorphs 3-IC2B4H7 and 6-IC2B4H7. No HI was observed. The iodination of C2B4H6 (with Al2I6 at 75C.) similarly formed H2 and a 20% yield of 2-IC2B4H5. The nmr and mass spectra of these iodocarboranes were used for identification and structural understanding. Both carboranes resisted the action of mercury salts for the replacement of iodine from boron. The easily formed adduct IC2B4H5:N(CH3)3 probably is a new kind of quaternary ammonium salt. (Author)

Two areas of research are discussed. The first reports gives a new insight into the action of bases on pentaborane(9) from its vapor-phase reaction with dimethyl sulfide at temperatures above 75C, to form diborane (Or a BH3 complex) and a resin containing (CH3)2S. The second report discussed the preparation of a compound formed quantitatively from the ligand 1-(CF3)2PB5H8 in excess liquid Ni(CO)4, at 25C. The pertinent stoichiometry (with mmole quantities) is represented as follows: 1(CF3)2PB5H8 + Ni(CO)4 yields CO + 1-(CF3)2PB5H8. Ni(CO)3. (Author)

THE SYNTHESIS OF NONABORANE, B9H15( Book )

The nonaborane B9H15 has been obtained in yields near 13% by the interaction of B5H11 with a surface of hexamethylenetetramine, (CH2)6N4. Purification by high-vacuum distillation methods and by low-temperature crystallization raised to m.p. to +2.6 degrees; vapor tension 0.8 mm. at 28 degrees. The formula was proved by quantitative decomposition to H2 and B and by a mol. wt. determination involving flash evaporation. The mass spectrum suggests the same substance as the B9H15 used for the X-ray determination of structure. The IR and B-11 magnetic resonance spectra are presented. Further experience with the synthesis of other polyboranes from B5H11 also is described. (Author)
