"Miami Vice met en scène Sonny Crockett et Ricardo Tubbs, deux inspecteurs du département du crime organisé (OCB) de la police de Miami, la Metro-Dade Police Department, agissant le plus souvent en civil et sous couverture, utilisant de fausses identités dans le cadre de leurs enquêtes. Crockett, un ancien footballeur américain ayant mis fin à sa carrière à la suite d'une blessure entre en 1974, à son retour de la guerre du Viêt Nam, dans la police de Miami. Tubbs, un policier ayant quitté New York pour Miami à la recherche de l'assassin de son frère, s'engage au Metro-Dade et devient le partenaire permanent de Crockett. Ils sont sous les ordres du lieutenant Martin Castillo, ancien agent de la Drug Enforcement Administration au Viêt Nam, un homme taciturne et vivant reclus. Le scénario joue sur le contraste entre les deux collègues, tant au niveau du caractère que du physique (Crockett est Blanc, Tubbs Noir). La plupart des affaires qu'ils ont à traiter sont liées, comme le titre de la série l'indique (Miami Vice, "brigade des mœurs de Miami" en français), au trafic de drogue international en provenance d'Amérique latine et à la prostitution.
