Episodes from the life of Elizabeth I, Queen of England, beginning with the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and ending with her death. The focus is on the Queen's tragic romance with Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. Upon hearing from a fortune teller that Essex is fated to die on the scaffold, Elizabeth gives him a ring with instructions to return it if he needs her help. She promises to save him, however great his fault. Essex falls in love with the Countess of Nottingham, and the affair is discovered by her husband, who informs the queen. Angry, she orders that Essex be arrested, but regrets her decision. She begs the countess to persuade Essex to return the ring, but Nottingham discovers his wife on her way to the queen with the ring, and throws it into the Thames. The queen, thinking that Essex is too proud to ask for clemency, proceeds with the execution. She spends the rest of her life in sorrow and regret
