From the Publisher: Intergroup conflict has been a perennial problem in the United States since colonial times. This book describes how a group of educators, social activists, and scholars tried to reduce intergroup tensions and create schools where people of all groups could learn together and from each other. Demonstrating the links between the current multicultural education movement and the roots of intergroup education, Cherry Banks helps us to understand where we've been, where we are, and where we might strive to be in our future attempts to understand and teach diversity

A Content Analysis of the Treatment of Black Americans on Television by Cherry A. McGee Banks( Book )

1 edition published in 1975 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The relationship between the racial composition of television casts and their portrayal of Black Americans is examined. Observations of six selected television programs over several weeks indicated that the portrayal of Black in integrated and all-Black programs communicates different images about Black Americans. The results indicate that Black characters in all-Black television casts display a significantly greater number of stereotypic Black characteristics, more personal and family problems, and tend to have low social status. Black characters in integrated television casts display a significantly greater number of socially valued characteristics, community problems, and high social status symbols. The study raises questions on the effects of these two types of portrayals on children's racial attitudes and self-concepts. The all-Black programs which contain negative elements that are traditionally associated with Black Americans may reinforce or instill stereotypic images of Blacks in the viewer. The programs with integrated casts may reinforce the notion that Black people are highly assimilated, upward mobile members of society. (Author/DE)
Gender and Race as Factors in Educational Leadership and Administration by Cherry A. McGee Banks( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The status and characteristics of women and people of color in educational leadership and administration are reviewed in order to acquaint readers with significant studies and to provide an overview of the experiences of principals and superintendents of minority status. Studies of educational leadership have tended to be rather limited in scope, focusing on one key variable rather than several variables, the intersections between them, or the entire context in which the leader works. A major theme of the paper is the relationship of social context to the underrepresentation of women and people of color in educational leadership positions. Firm explanations for this continued underrepresentation are still lacking. In terms of advanced training, degrees held, number of years in the profession, and total numbers in the pool from which administrators are drawn, there is no justification for the small numbers of women and minority educational leaders. Research is needed to explore the ways in which gender and race affect the recruitment, selection, and retention process for school administrators. (Contains 73 references.) (Sld)
