Pharmacology of asthma by C. P Page( Book )

9 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume covers the latest advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of asthma. Our understanding of asthma has changed dramatically in recent years, and much of this new information is brought together by internationally recognised authorities. They review in depth the changing concepts of the inflammatory processes in asthma and discuss the implications for research and future therapy of this common chronic disease. Each chapter is extensively referenced and generously illustrated with clear diagrams and photographs and represents the state of the art in this growing area. Many of the advances in our understanding of asthma have originated from a pharmacological approach, and these promising new options for pharmacological intervention are highlighted. This volume will be invaluable for research scientists and clinicians involved in asthma research and will be a major reference resource for chest physicians and those involved in the development of novel pharmaceutical entities

An atlas of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD by T. T Hansel( Book )

10 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Provides a visual reference for diagnosing and treating smoking-related and other lung diseases. The book contains approximately 120 detailed schematic diagrams that detail disease progression, diagnosis, and treatment; clinical photographic material that illustrates visual diagnostic cues; and figures and flow diagrams that present a concise review of the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of the disease. The authors cover the drugs recommended for treatment, their mode of action, potential side effects, and recommended uses. They discuss the management of both stable COPD and exacerbations of COPD, differential diagnoses and asthma, management in general practice and in hospitals, and future trends in therapy, such as new bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory treatments
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : (COPD) by Peter J Barnes( Book )

16 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in English and Turkish and held by 123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global health problem that is increasing throughout the world, especially in developing countries. This increase reflects continuing cigarette smoking, which remains the commonest cause, but also relates to aging populations since COPD is a disease of the elderly and may be regarded as accelerated aging of the lung. In addition to cigarette smoking, other causal mechanisms, such as exposure to biomass fuels, air pollution, and poor nutrition, as well as poverty, are also recognized as contributory risk factors. COPD is now the third most prevalent cause of death in Western countries and its mortality is rising in developing countries. It has now become one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization. Although it is one of the most common chronic diseases, it is still poorly recognized among the general public and among doctors, with over half of the patients undiagnosed and many of the diagnosed cases mistreated. There is a major need to better understand this complex disease, which appears to include many poorly understood phenotypes. It is increasingly recognized that COPD occurs with several comorbidities, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and lung cancer, which have a major effect on clinical outcomes and management. This volume brings together current knowledge of COPD, written by international experts, and explores every aspect of the disease from epidemiology, through clinical presentation, to underlying mechanisms and clinical management
