Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Omar Khayyam( Book )
44 editions published between 1907 and 2010 in English and held by 1,188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the eleventh century, in Persia, there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami--or, Omar, son of Abraham, the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry, and while his rhymes received little attention in their day, they were rediscovered and translated into beautiful English--more than seven centuries later--by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds, a great collaboration of the past and the present, and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the best loved poem cycles in the English language. With their concern for the here and now, as opposed to the hereafter, Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago; they are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow, of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface, is truly a classic, and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love

An immediate success upon its initial publication in 1653, The Compleat Angler has since become the most reprinted secular book in the English language. Here we join Piscator, Venator, and Auceps on a morning journey through the English countryside as Piscator advises on catching and eating different species of fish and expounds upon the satisfactions of the fisherman's life. More than a guide to the subtle intricacies of the sport, Walton's treatise is a graceful portrait of a simple life made rich by virtue and good friendship. -- from back cover

In 1837 Thomas Carlyle published his work The French Revolution: A History and overnight became a celebrity. € The work was filled with a passionate intensity, hitherto unknown in historical writing. In a politically-charged Europe, filled with fears and hopes of revolution, Carlyle's account of the motivations and urges that inspired the events in France became powerfully relevant. Carlyle's style emphasised this, continually pointing to the urgency of action - often using the present tense. For him, chaotic events demanded 'heroes' to take control over the competing forces erupting with
