Originally a 20-episode serial, "The Perils of Pauline" premiered March 23, 1914 at Loew's Broadway Theatre in New York City. The ward of wealthy Mr. Marvin, Pauline is engaged to his nephew Harry. When Mr. Marvin dies unexpectedly, it is revealed that he has left her inheritance in the care of his secretary, Mr. Koerner, until the time of her marriage. Although she truly loves Harry, Pauline wants to wait a while before marrying. She plans to become an author, and decides that to prepare herself, she must go out and have adventures.
