)
93 editions published between 1995 and 2007 in 13 languages and held by 4,653 libraries worldwide Colin Powell is the embodiment of the American dream. He was born in Harlem to immigrant parents from Jamaica. He knew the rough life of the streets. He overcame a barely average start at school. Then he joined the Army. The rest is history--Vietnam, the Pentagon, Panama, Desert Storm--but a history that until now has been known only on the surface. Here, for the first time, Colin Powell himself tells us how it happened, in a memoir distinguished by a heartfelt love of country and family, warm good humor, and a soldier's directness. MY AMERICAN JOURNEY is the powerful story of a life well lived and well told. It is also a view from the mountaintop of the political landscape of America. At a time when Americans feel disenchanted with their leaders, General Powell's passionate views on family, personal responsibility, and, in his own words, "the greatness of America and the opportunities it offers" inspire hope and present a blueprint for the future. An utterly absorbing account, it is history with a vision. "The stirring, only-in-America story of one determined man's journey from the South Bronx to directing the mightiest of military forces.

The Golden Thirteen : recollections of the first Black naval officers
(
Book
)
2 editions published between 1994 and 2011 in English and held by 78 libraries worldwide In early 1944, at a time when the United States was fighting a global war to free enslaved people, its naval officer corps was as lily-white as it had been a century earlier, before the Civil War. There were some one hundred thousand African American enlisted men in the Navy, however, so the leaders of the service reluctantly set about commissioning a few as officers. In January 1944, sixteen black enlisted men gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Illinois to begin a cram course that would turn them into the U.S. Navy's first African American officers on active duty. Treated more as pariahs than pioneers, however, they were often denied the privileges and respect routinely accorded white naval officers and were given menial assignments unworthy of their abilities and training. Yet despite this discrimination, these inspirational young men broke new ground and opened the door for generations to come.
