In addition, she worked as a camp cook, laundress, and teacher. Reminiscences of My Life in Camp not only chronicles daily life on the battlefront but also records interactions between blacks and whites, men and women, and Northerners and Southerners during and after the war. Susie King Taylor (1848-1912) was the only African American woman to publish a memoir of her wartime experiences and the first African American to teach openly in a school for former slaves in Georgia

Spanning the years from 1853-1902, these autobiographical narratives offer keen insight into four vastly different lives. Nancy Prince, Suzie King Taylor, Bethany Veney, and Louisa Picquet provide rich, evocative descriptions of what it meant to be black and a woman in an oppresive era. The common struggle for security unites the narratives of these four heroic women, who all sought to maintain their dignity and independence in an increasingly violent and consistently racist America. Includes an introduction by Anthony G. Barthelemy
