Preaching to the black middle class : words of challenge, words of hope by Marvin Andrew McMickle( Book )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first and only book to explore ministering and preaching to one of the fastest growing segments of our society, the black middle class. In the theological tradition of the black church that celebrates "preached theology," author Marvin McMickle preaches to both pastors of black middle-class churches and to members of the black middle class. He demonstrates how ministers can develop sermons and programs that speak to the "two separate congregations" that coexist in their pews--middle-class commuters and the underclass residents of the immediate neighborhood
Shaping the claim : moving from text to sermon by Marvin Andrew McMickle( Book )

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Shaping the Claim helps the preacher discover the core of the message to be preached--the sermonic 'claim'. In order to be effective, a sermon needs to address the hearers at three distinct levels: the head or the intellect, the heart or passion and conviction, and the hand or an expected and desired response. The sermonic claim is the way in which the sermon engages the listener at all three levels, sometimes sequentially and sometimes simultaneously."--Back cover

A time to speak : how Black pastors can respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic by Marvin Andrew McMickle( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Time to Speak, organized around the themes found in Ecclesiastes 3, addresses and dismantles some of the arguments rooted in a less than thorough analysis of the Bible that have been used to prevent many black pastors and worshipers in black churches from getting involved with people who are either infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. McMickle asserts it is time for black pastors and their worshipers to recognize that HIV/AIDS is no longer a disease that is isolated and limited to gay, white males. It has become the leading cause of death among black women ages 25 - 34. Additionally, it is spreading among black teens who experiment at earlier and earlier ages with behaviors that put them at risk. Further, senior citizens are contracting the disease at an alarming rate when they become sexually active with new partners following the death of a long-term spouse or after a divorce
