Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun : the odyssey of an artist in an age of revolution by Gita May( Book )

16 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 904 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The foremost woman artist of her age, Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842) exerted her considerable charm to become the friend, and then official portraitist, of Marie Antoinette. Though profitable, this role made her a public and controversial figure, and in 1789 it precipitated her exile. In a Europe torn by strife and revolution, this singularly gifted and high-spirited woman nevertheless managed to thrive as an independent, self-supporting artist, doggedly setting up studios in Rome, Naples, Venice, Milan, Vienna, St. Petersburg, and London. Long overlooked or dismissed, Vigée Le Brun's portraits now hang in the Louvre, in a room of their own, as well as in all leading art museums of the world. Illustrations include sixteen of her portraits presented in full color.--From publisher description

Candide, or, Optimism : a new translation, backgrounds, criticism by Voltaire( Book )

5 editions published between 2003 and 2005 in English and held by 374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A flamboyant and controversial personality of enormous wit and intelligence, Voltaire remains one of the most influential figures of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment. Candide, his masterpiece, is a brilliant satire of the theory that our world is "the best of all possible worlds." The book traces the picaresque adventures of the guileless Candide, who is forced into the army, flogged, shipwrecked, betrayed, robbed, separated from his beloved Cunegonde, tortured by the Inquisition, et cetera, all without losing his resilience and will to live and pursue a happy life." "This Modern Library edition, published to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of Random House, is a facsimile of the first book ever released under the Random House colophon. It includes the timeless illustrations by Rockwell Kent, a twentieth-century artist whose wit and genius serve as a counterpart and compliment to Voltaire's."--Jacket
Essais sur la peinture ; salons de 1759, 1761, 1763 by Denis Diderot( Book )

24 editions published between 1984 and 2007 in French and Undetermined and held by 167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
