Monet and modernism( Book )

4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 391 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This illustrated volume examines the lines of influence leading from Monet to the great modern exponents of Abstract Expressionism. The book emphasizes the innovative aspects of Monet's late works, including his famous waterlily paintings and Rouen Cathedral series. His paintings are juxtaposed with those of 30 modern artists, including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Ellsworth Kelly." "The ground-breaking importance of Monet's late work was long underestimated by avant-garde artists of the early 20th century. For them Cezanne was the father of modern art. It was only in the 1950s that the Abstract Expressionists in America and Europe began to recognize and build upon Monet's achievements. This fascinating volume provides fresh insight into the works of Monet and the followers of Abstract Expressionism in its various American and European manifestations."--Jacket
Alphonse Mucha by Alphonse Mucha( Book )

4 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Alfonse Mucha is known largely for having originated Art Nouveau, when his poster of the actress Sarah Bernhardt became a legendary icon of the movement. Mucha went on to design hundreds of pieces in the decorative arts field, but later distanced himself from the style he pioneered, devoting his time and energy to painting. This book presents the full array of Mucha's artistic contributions-not only his posters and jewelry designs but also his design for the pavilion of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 1900 World's Fair. The book also includes his works on canvas, which include pastels and frescoes, and his magnum opus, The Slavic Epic, a series of 20 paintings depicting the history of his native people. A stunning selection of 700 color illustrations is accompanied with essays that explore Mucha's style and inspirations, his transition away from the decorative arts, and his forays into photography..."--Publisher description

Hammershøi and Europe by Kasper Monrad( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A comprehensive study of the great Danish painter, this monograph places Hammershøi within the context of his European contemporaries. This generously illustrated volume examines Hammershøi's work as a whole and in relation to the artists of his generation. Hammershøi's enigmatic paintings, with their rich and muted palettes, have always enjoyed enormous popularity in Scandinavia, and recently his work has received renewed attention across the globe. Thematically arranged, this volume includes beautiful reproductions and essays that focus on Hammershøi's isolated private life and travels; his time in London and Germany; and comparisons between him and such notable painters as Seurat, Gauguin, and Whistler. Fans of this remarkable painter, and anyone interested in modern art, will enjoy this celebration of Hammershøi as a part of the pantheon of great European painters."--Publisher's website
Nordic art : the modern breakthrough 1860-1920 by Groninger Museum( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries marked a defining moment in Nordic art. From the cozy domestic landscapes of Carl Larsson to Edvard Munch's darkly beautiful The Scream, the diverse artwork of the period mirrored shifting literary and intellectual pursuits in their attempts to broaden the cultural conversation to incorporate the identities and traditions of the region. Through more than two hundred paintings, Nordic Art tells the story of this important period. In conversation with both Scandinavian culture and the contemporary art of the time, turn-of-the-century artists developed distinctly Nordic interpretations of realism, impressionism, and symbolism. The book focuses on the transitions between these forms of expression, as well as the impact of Nordic art on mainstream European art. Featuring works by well-known artists, including Carl Larsson, Edvard Munch, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and Vilhelm Hammershøi, the book also introduces artists from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland whose contributions, though crucial, may be less familiar to international audiences. With Nordic Art, David Jackson offers the first comprehensive look at this critical period of cultural development in the Nordic countries and the extraordinary art that arose during this time."--Publisher's website

Georgia O'Keeffe by Georgia O'Keeffe( Book )

6 editions published in 2011 in English and Italian and held by 168 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Starting in the '20s - when Georgia was recognized as one of the most important protagonists of modernism in America - until her death, the artist and her works have attracted a great interest in the arts community and the American public. Despite the great gained recognition in America and Europe, only a few of her works have been exhibited to the European public. Artist and woman, Georgia O 'Keeffe (1887-1986) embodies the American myth of independence, individualism and greatness. Her works are unique, as the combination of colors: the study of forms, the choice of tone and color, the curvy and sensual portion of the brush are repeated in games and new combinations, but never quite different. Georgia O'Keeffe began her studies in Chicago then continued to New York. After working as a graphic design and teacher, from 1918 she devoted herself entirely to painting, with the support of photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz, whom she married in 1924 and with whom she lived at 30th floor of the Shelton Hotel in New York. These were the years when she began to paint the Big City. After many trips to the United States, following the death of her husband in 1946, she settled in New Mexico. At the age of 66 years, she began to travel the world and devoted herself to experiments with clay. She died in 1986"--Transliterated from publisher's website
