Closed-form mathematical models are formulated for the rate of development and strength of secondary current, and for bed topography in meandering, erodible-bed streams of arbitary plan form. The formulations utilize conservation of flux-of-moment-of momentum as the additional relation required to complete the formulation for the radial bed-shear stress. The secondary-flow-velocity calculation was uncoupled from the calculation of the radial mass-shift velocity and streamwise velocity distributions, which were obtained from the depth-integrated equations expressing conservation of mass and streamwise momentum. Numerical simulations were made for one laboratory flow and two Sacramento River flows with constant centerline curvature. Good agreement was obtained between measured and computed distributions of flow and depth-averaged streamwise velocity. (Author)

The field study was conducted in order to obtain a better understanding of the flow and sediment-transport mechanisms responsible for the recurrent shoaling that has been experienced in the vicinities of Fox Island (RM-355-6)and Buzzard Island (RM-349-50) in Pool 20 between Keokuk, Iowa, and Canton, Missouri, in the Mississippi River. Three sets of detailed data on transverse and streamwise distributions of flow velocity, suspended sediment discharge, bed-load discharge, bed-material properties, and flow depth were obtained for the high, intermediate, and low river stages during the period between May and September, 1976. The field data were used to establish empirical relationships between the sediment transport rates and hydraulic quantities in the study reaches. Based on the empirical sediment discharge formulas, closures of some side-channels to increase-transport capacity in the main channel of the study reaches have been suggested. (Author)

To test the applicability of various one-dimensional sediment-transport numerical models of movable-bed channels to Pool 20 to the Mississippi River, detailed field data were first collected, and several numerical models were subsequently evaluated using these field data. Chapter I describes the detailed results from a sediment sampling field study conducted in 1978 near Buzzard Island (RM 347-55) in Pool 20 of the Mississippi River. Variations in the longitudinal and transverse distributions are presented for various flow quantities and sediment characteristics, and are analyzed in connection with the prevalent shoaling problem in the Buzzard Island study reach. Chapter II evaluates the performance of four mathematical simulation models which used the data from a complimentary field study conducted in 1976 to establish the initial conditions when predicting the 1978 conditions. The four models evaluated were: (1) the HEC-6 model provided by the Hydrologic Engineering Center, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; (2) the SUSR; (3) UUWSR models employed at the Colorado State University; and (4) the CHAR2 model used by the Sogreah consulting firm in Grenoble, France. An inventory study concerning available stream sedimentation and flow data for the GREAT II (Great River Environmental Action Team II) watershed was conducted for the Sediment and Erosion Work Group of GREAT II. The study area covered the Upper Mississippi River and its tributaries between Guttenberg, IA, and Saverton, MO. These data were utilized to obtain rough estimates of annual sediment yields at individual sediment sampling stations by simple correlating monthly averaged suspended-sediment discharges with monthly averaged stream discharges. Based on these estimates, major sediment source areas were identified, and recommendations regarding installation of new sediment sampling stations for further baseline data were made. A review of some existing methodologies in estimating sediment yields also was made, and a plan of study to determine quantities of sediment delivered by tributary sources into the Mississippi River was proposed. A 1:24 Froude-scale model of the proposed Lake Chicot Pumping Station was constructed and utilized to identify and to correct hydraulically objectionable features of the flows in the pump sumps. The model tests showed that the flows from the plant forebay generally enter the individual pump bays with a strong transverse component of velocity and produce an intense captive eddy on the lee side of each pump-bay partition wall. The transverse velocity resulted from geometric constraints imposed on the plant configuration. In order to achieve better pump approach-flow conditions trash racks with relatively deep vertical bars which functioned as turning vanes were proposed. A 1:10-scale sump model then was built to test for model-scale effects in the trash-rack tests, and an extensive study was conducted to obtain an improved sump configuration which would minimize any vortex-related problems in and around pump suction bells. The modified sump configuration has small clearance between the pump bell and sump back-wall; converging sidewalls; and a floor mounted splitter plate (vortex breaker) beneath the pump. (Author)

This report presents results of an investigation conducted to evaluate the capabilities and limitations of the Iowa Sediment Concentration Measuring System (ISCMS). The manner in which the ISCMS responds to a group of particles and to a single particle is presented. Specifically, problems with non-uniformities in the transducer field and problems created by inadequate frequency response are discussed. The results of tests conducted in an oscillatory flow facility are evaluated and the use of the ISCMS for measuring the instantaneous suspended sediment concentration is reviewed. Recommendations for improvement of the instrument are also suggested
