An invitation to quantum field theory by
Luis AlvarezGaumé(
)
23 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and German and held by 487 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book provides an introduction to Quantum Field Theory (QFT) at an elementary levelwith only special relativity, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics as prerequisites. For this fresh approach to teaching QFT, based on numerous lectures and courses given by the authors, a representative sample of topics has been selected containing some of the more innovative, challenging or subtle concepts. They are presented with a minimum of technical details, the discussion of the main ideas being more important than the presentation of the typically very technical mathematical details necessary to obtain the final results. Special attention is given to the realization of symmetries in particle physics: global and local symmetries, explicit, spontaneously broken, and anomalous continuous symmetries, as well as discrete symmetries. Beyond providing an overview of the standard model of the strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions and the current understanding of the origin of mass, the text enumerates the general features of renormalization theory as well as providing a cursory description of effective field theories and the problem of naturalness in physics. Among the more advanced topics the reader will find are an outline of the first principles derivation of the CPT theorem and the spinstatistics connection. As indicated by the title, the main aim of this text is to motivate the reader to study QFT by providing a selfcontained and approachable introduction to the most exciting and challenging aspects of this successful theoretical framework.Back cover

From the PS to the LHC : 50 years of Nobel memories in highenergy physics by
Luis AlvarezGaumé(
)
16 editions published between 2012 and 2015 in English and German and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This collection of lectures and essays by eminent researchers in the field, many of them Nobel laureates, is an outgrowth of a special event held at CERN in December 2009, coinciding with the start of LHC operations. Careful transcriptions of the lectures have been worked out, subsequently validated and edited by the lecturers themselves. This unique insight into the history of the field includes also some perspectives on modern developments and will benefit everyone working in the field, as well as historians of science

Quantum mechanics I by
A Galindo(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is a textbook on nonrelativistic quantum mechanics that emphasizes clarification of the nature of the basic postulates and the interpretation of the theory. It contains special material, often only accessible in scientific journals, on bound states, scattering theory, and both analytical and approximation techniques. Applications to many branches of physics are given. Among the topics covered are onedimensional problems, angular momentum, twoparticle systems, symmetry transformations, collision theory, the WKB method, and stationary and timedependent perturbation and variational techniques. Particles in an electromagnetic field, manybody systems, atoms, and radiation theory are studied. The book is a considerably improved and completely updated English translation of a very successful Spanish textbook and is aimed at students in their second year of university
