Amartya Sen's capability approach and social justice in education by Melanie Walker( )

17 editions published between 2007 and 2010 in English and held by 629 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This compelling book introduces Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's capability approach, and explores its significance for theory, policy and practice in education. The capability approach has attracted attention across disciplinary boundaries in recent years contributing to debates in economics, political philosophy, health and social policy. This book complements these discussions by considering the potential of the approach for work in education, showing how the capability approach challenges some of the key assumptions of human capital theory and how it can provide substance for policy and practice in education concerned with social justice. The book looks particularly at questions concerning the education of children, gender equality, and higher education. Contributors hail from the UK, USA, Australia, Italy and Mexico

"Gender, Schooling and Global Social Justice is the first book to examine gender equality in schooling as an aspiration of global social justice. It combines a unique analysis that brings together a discussion of the ethical and conceptual languages in which this aspiration has been articulated with descriptions of initiatives to address questions of gender, justice and schooling. Global inequalities and higher education : whose interests are we serving? by Elaine Unterhalter( Book )

10 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 198 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Global Inequalities and Higher Education seeks to examine how universities operate within a context of global inequality. The relationship between the university as an international institution and the process of globalization is an ambivalent one. The expansion of higher education can generate inequalities but can also contribute to the development of new social democratic structures through teaching, research and the development of student and staff dispositions with a potential to promote social justice. This book seeks to examine the promises and tensions by bringing together the themes of inequalities entailed in looking at global higher education through an interdisciplinary perspective. The book offers a picture of inequalities in higher education understood in relation to access, processes of learning and teaching practices and identities. This entails considering inequalities in higher education at the interface of the external (political, social, economic and cultural forces shaping global and national higher education policies) and internal contexts (the teaching and learning process and its actors including institutions, student and staff). The book thus examines the interfaces between the micro and macro environments of universities and identifies changes and continuities with regard to inequality across time and space

Gender equality, HIV, and AIDS : a challenge for the education sector by Sheila Aikman( Book )

7 editions published in 2008 in English and French and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The feminization of HIV epidemics has been steadily increasing worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa, 75 per cent of young people infected are women and girls. Gender disparities in education contribute to social conditions that facilitate the spread of HIV. This book will help government policymakers and NGO practitioners improve their understanding of how schools can practice gender equality and provide HIV and AIDS education.Researchers, NGOs, and donors contribute case studies and research from around the world. They show the extreme importance of educating girls???who are less likely than boys to attend school and therefore are more vulnerable to HIV. Also addressed are the need to educate boys against violence towards girls; teachers against sexual abuse of girls; and ministers of education about implementing, monitoring, and evaluating equal gender practices in education.Topical and informative, this fascinating book includes examples from South Africa and South-East Asia and seeks to explain and illustrate the key arguments and debates in this area."
Education and international development : an introduction by Tristan McCowan( Book )

6 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Education is fundamental to every aspect of development and there is widespread support across the world for policies that affirm that all children, regardless of their circumstances, have a right to quality schooling. Yet despite concerted efforts from national governments, multilateral organisations and NGOs over many decades we are still far from achieving education for all. In addition, while education can enhance human development, it is also associated with persistent inequalities. Education and International Development provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, giving an overview of the history, influential theories, important concepts and areas of achievement, and presenting a critical reflection on emerging trends in policy, practice and research. With chapters that review key challenges and inspiring initiatives in countries around the globe - focusing on critical issues such as language, conflict and teachers - this book serves both as a companion to graduate studies in international education and a concise reference book for practitioners and educators in the field"--

Towards gender equality : South African schools during the HIV and AIDS epidemic by Robert Morrell( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the democratic elections in 1994, there have been concerted efforts to redress race and gender inequalities in South Africa. Learners and teachers have responded in their own ways to change and this nuanced analysis reveals their struggles to realise gender equality by living gender differently. In distinguishing short-term interventions to change behaviour from institutional approaches, which seek to transform school structures, this book offers a new framework for understanding gender-equality initiatives. 'This important and highly readable book tackles the complex and thorny interrelationships between education, gender differences and the HIV and AIDS pandemic. This is must-read for teachers, educators at all levels and administrators.'
