Ideas for science investigations by Victor M Showalter( Book )

2 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 47 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ideas for science investigations for secondary school students are described. In part I the student is introduced to the idea of the project-type investigation and is given a general overview of the manual. A section which is written for the teacher includes a discussion of (1) educational values derived from individual investigations, and (2) the role of the teacher in investigative activities. In part ii the phenomenon of sap rise in plants is used to illustrate problems for investigation. The approaches to related problems taken by three students are used to demonstrate approaches to experimental work. Information on procedures involved in reporting the results of an investigation is also included in this section. Part iii contains ideas for possible investigation in the areas of biology, chemistry, and physics. Items included generally contain some background information and a series of questions. An annotated bibliography, subdivided into ideas, techniques, and information in depth comprises part iv. This document is available for $2.25 from the national science teachers association, 1201 sixteenth street, N.W., washington, D.C. 20036. (ag)

Guide to FUSE modules abstracted in RIE, 1976 by Victor M Showalter( Book )

2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This guide provides a resource for teachers interested in developing unified science instructional units, and is a guide to potential modules that can be assembled into instructional units with a minimum of materials, equipment, and time. All modules included were selected from documents abstracted in "Resources in Education (RIE)" and available through the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) system. Module ideas are indexed via ERIC document number (ED number) under themes including: general concepts, process, phenomenon, problem, cause-effect, density, energy, evolution, force, perception, population, system, and others. An abstract of each module idea is then listed in order by ED number. Each abstract includes components, status, materials, mode, context, target, themes, and a brief description. (SL)

Ideas for Science Projects by Victor M Showalter( Book )

2 editions published in 1962 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This booklet was written for students as a source of ideas for research type science projects. Part One shows how three high school students developed individual projects a s a result of asking questions about the same natural phenomena. Part Two contains project suggestions and sample questions designed to stimulate student thinking along research project lines. "Only those suggestions and questions are included that will yield some degree of success." Part Three is a guide to references. The authors have limited the entries to those of known value. Subject matter categories for which project ideas are presented include biology, chemistry, physics, and general science. (Bc)
Effects of a Unified Science Curriculum on High School Graduates by John S Richardson( Book )

2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Evaluated were longitudinal effects of a four-year unified science curriculum on high school graduates. Specific effects were grouped in areas of (1) interest in science, (2) scientific literacy, and (3) preparation for college science. The 358 subjects had graduated from high school four to seven years prior to the study. Efforts were made to control variables such as intelligence, school achievement, school setting, sex, and age. Data were obtained from high school and college transcripts and from a questionnaire. Findings indicated a general and consistent favorability for graduates from the unified science curriculum although the level of significance exceeded the arbitrary minimum in only a few isolated cases. A bibliography related to unified science is included. (Bc)
Seminar in the Design and Development of Science Instructional Materials, a Summary Report by Victor M Showalter( Book )

1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reported is an eight-week seminar conducted for ten junior high school science teachers. The purpose of the seminar was to develop attitudes to, and skills in, science teaching that would be consistent with the nature of science and the nature of the adolescent individual. The seminar was structured in four phases: development of science education theory, design and structuring of a science instructional unit, field trial of the instructional unit, and evaluation and revision of the instructional unit. Activities provided for each phase are described. Results of evaluation of the seminar by participants are reported. Recommendations are made relating to the provision and design of similar seminars. Appendices include a list of participants, a partial listing of references used in the seminar, two typical weekly schedules for phase one, a copy of the proposal for the seminar as submitted for funding, and participants' general reactions to the seminar. Toward a Unified Science Curriculum by Victor M Showalter( Book )

1 edition published in 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The two major models of science curriculum change, textbook revision and national curriculum projects, are derived from, and reinforce, the present curriculum structure. This is undesirable in a time of increasing fluidity and change, because adaptation to new situations is difficult. Unified science, based on the premise that science is a unity, offers a more flexible approach. Reasons supporting the view that science is a unity range from the philosophical point that there is only one universe to the pragmatic one of educational advantages with respect to universal scientific literacy. An ideal science curriculum would span the total period of general education from kindergarten to grade 12 or 14, and would be built of modules of varying length. A relatively small number of major concepts and a "spiral approach" would provide continuity. Testing within the ideal program would emphasize higher level cognitive skills and the social implications of science. Unified science curricula can be implemented by obtaining a consensus among teachers in a school district of the articulating concepts to be used, cooperative selection or development of modules, and the replacement of the existing programs one year at a time until all grade levels are using the unified program.
