Worlds of difference by Said Arjomand( )

12 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 890 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How can differences be understood in social theory through comparisons, and how should social theory relate to regional studies to do so? This question has been prevalent within the sociological field for over a century, but is becoming increasingly important in a globalised age in which cultural borders are constantly challenged and rapidly changing. In this collection, Arjomand and Reis illuminate the importance of exploring spatial, cultural and intellectual differences beyond generalizations, attempting to understand diversity in itself as it takes shape across the world
Democratization and bureaucratic neutrality by Haile K Asmerom( Book )

13 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 213 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book presents an innovative perspective on the classic theme of the relationships between democracy and bureaucracy. Taking into account the contemporary democratic wave, scholars from Europe, United States, Asia, Africa and Latin America discuss the mutual implications of bureaucratic neutrality and democratization. They depart from the assumption that if the ultimate goal of democratization is to establish democratic systems of governance, then administrative structures will have to be reshaped to adjust to the requirements of the political order in the making. The broad theoretical and conceptual dimensions relevant to the discussion are confronted in Part I. The rest of the book offers a global empirical perspective with detailed discussions of the challenges posed by democratization to public bureaucracies in different contexts
Getting respect : responding to stigma and discrimination in the United States, Brazil, and Israel by Michèle Lamont( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Racism is a common occurrence for members of marginalized groups around the world. Getting Respect illuminates their experiences by comparing three countries with enduring group boundaries: the United States, Brazil and Israel. The authors delve into what kinds of stigmatizing or discriminatory incidents individuals encounter in each country, how they respond to these occurrences, and what they view as the best strategy--whether individually, collectively, through confrontation, or through self-improvement--for dealing with such events. This deeply collaborative and integrated study draws on more than four hundred in-depth interviews with middle- and working-class men and women residing in and around multiethnic cities--New York City, Rio de Janeiro, and Tel Aviv--to compare the discriminatory experiences of African Americans, black Brazilians, and Arab Palestinian citizens of Israel, as well as Israeli Ethiopian Jews and Mizrahi (Sephardic) Jews"--Dust jacket front flap
A manifesto for social progress : ideas for a better society by Marc Fleurbaey( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At this time when many have lost hope amidst conflicts, terrorism, environmental destruction, economic inequality and the breakdown of democracy, this beautifully written book outlines how to rethink and reform our key institutions - markets, corporations, welfare policies, democratic processes and transnational governance - to create better societies based on core principles of human dignity, sustainability, and justice. This new vision is based on the findings of over 300 social scientists involved in the collaborative, interdisciplinary International Panel on Social Progress. Relying on state-of-the-art scholarship, these social scientists reviewed the desirability and possibility of all relevant forms of long-term social change, explored current challenges, and synthesized their knowledge on the principles, possibilities, and methods for improving the main institutions of modern societies. Their common finding is that a better society is indeed possible, its contours can be broadly described, and all we need is to gather forces toward realizing this vision

Global processes and national dilemmas : the uncertain consequences of the interplay of old and new repertoires of social identity and inclusion by Elisa P Reis( )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this article, we explore the impact of the global cultural transformation that reconciles the values of equality and difference as parameters of the good life. Focusing on the way Brazilians perceive both equality and difference, we comment on the uncertain consequences of the interplay of old and new repertoires of social identity and inclusion. In particular, we look at the ethnoracial aspect, the most salient issue on the current debate about difference. Empirically, we analyze perceptions of inequality and difference among different segments of the Brazilian population. In particular, we focus on two issues. First, we discuss the interface of ethnoracial and national identifications in the country. Second, we explore perceptions about inequality and difference and their relationship, with special emphasis on attitudes towards affirmative action -- the most traditional policy to take into account particular identities while distributing social resources -- among distinct socioeconomic and racial groups"--Abstract
