Verdun : the longest battle of the Great War by Paul Jankowski( Book )

14 editions published between 2013 and 2016 in English and held by 775 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At seven o'clock in the morning on February 21, 1916, the ground in northern France began to shake. For the next ten hours, twelve hundred German guns showered shells on a salient in French lines. The massive weight of explosives collapsed dugouts, obliterated trenches, severed communication wires, and drove men mad. As the barrage lifted, German troops moved forward, darting from shell crater to shell crater. The battle of Verdun had begun. In Verdun, historian Paul Jankowski provides the definitive account of the iconic battle of World War I. A leading expert on the French past, Jankowski combines the best of traditional military history -- its emphasis on leaders, plans, technology, and the contingency of combat -- with the newer social and cultural approach, stressing the soldier's experience, the institutional structures of the military, and the impact of war on national memory. Unusually, this book draws on deep research in French and German archives; this mastery of sources in both languages gives Verdun unprecedented authority and scope. In many ways, Jankowski writes, the battle represents a conundrum. It has an almost unique status among the battles of the Great War; and yet, he argues, it was not decisive, sparked no political changes, and was not even the bloodiest episode of the conflict. It is said that Verdun made France, he writes; but the question should be, What did France make of Verdun? Over time, it proved to be the last great victory of French arms, standing on their own. And, for France and Germany, the battle would symbolize the terror of industrialized warfare, "a technocratic Moloch devouring its children," where no advance or retreat was possible, yet national resources poured in ceaselessly, perpetuating slaughter indefinitely. - Publisher

"Jankowski recounts Stavisky's notorious schemes and untimely demise, the deadly riot that rocked Paris in its wake, the fall of successive governments including that of Edouard Daladier, and the spectacular trial of many of the swindler's accomplices. "Much against his will, Sacha Stavisky," the author observes, "ignited an explosion that briefly engulfed the entire system of government.""--Jacket
Shades of indignation : political scandals in France, past and present by Paul Jankowski( Book )

7 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Corruption is far from disappearing, yet now it inspires resignation rather than indignation - and as such, it has lost its power to scandalize. Jankowski claims that such transformations tell a tale. The state that once aspired to pre-eminence as the sole magnet of loyalty, touchstone of probity, and guarantor of right, has yielded significant ground to the individual who is now more likely to elevate his own dignity and cry scandal on his own behalf."--Jacket

The social and economic history of Jews in Kiev before Frebruary 1917 by Viktorii︠a︡ Khiterer( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Unfortunately the special meaning and holiness of Kiev for the Russian people, as well as the dramatic and turbulent history of the city, had a negative impact on the status of Jews who lived there. The history of the Jewish community was interrupted several times due to religious intolerance and the Judeophobia of various Kiev authorities. In the periods when Jews where tolerated in Kiev, their conditions of life in the city were harsher than in many other places in Imperial Russia
