"A nation rising to greatness through the work of men and women, new country opening, raw land blossoming, crude towns growing into cities, territories becoming rich states. In 1889, President Harrison opened the vast Indian Oklahoma lands for white settlement--2,000,000 acres free for the taking, poor and rich pouring in, swarming the border, waiting for the starting gun, at noon, April 22nd ..."--Prologue from title screens. A western saga about empire building, it follows the adventures of Yancey Cravat, a lawyer and newspaperman from Wichita, who joins the Oklahoma Territory land rush in 1889. Soon he and his family are citizens of Osage. Beset by wanderlust, Yancey joins the Cherokee Strip land rush in 1893, leaving wife Sabra behind to run the newspaper and raise their son, Cimarron. By 1907, Yancey is back at home as Oklahoma becomes a state. During the oil boom, he refuses to join a scheme to cheat the Indians out of their oil rich land, and then disappears again. In 1929, Sabra is elected Oklahoma's first Congresswoman, Cimarron is married to an Indian princess, and Yancey still hasn"t returned

Buster Keaton, the shorts collection, 1917-1923( Visual )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A five-disc collection of Keaton's 32 extant silent short films, presented in 2K restorations, newly scanned using archival film elements from around the world. This set includes the short comedies that Keaton made with pioneering silent comedy genius Roscoe Arbuckle, as well as all 19 of his independently-produced silent shorts that have cemented his reputation as one of silent cinema's most unique and respected artists. BUSTER KEATON: THE SHORTS COLLECTION includes 13 of the Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle comedies produced between 1917-1920, in which Keaton co-starred alongside Arbuckle and Al St. John. In these formative works, Keaton honed his craft performing for the camera, and learned the art of filmmaking from Arbuckle, an extremely gifted comedy performer and director who, at the time, was second only to Chaplin among the screen's most popular clowns. The set also showcases all 19 of Keaton's independently-produced silent shorts, made between 1920 and 1923, including such classics as One Week, which follows the disastrous efforts of Keaton and his new bride to put together a prefabricated house; Cops, in which Keaton finds himself pursued by the entire city police force; and The Playhouse, a technical tour-de-force with Keaton playing all of the members of the cast (and audience) of a theatrical show. This edition also features the restored version of Hard Luck, Keaton's own favorite of all his short comedies, which includes the "missing" ending with the final sight gag intact. These films, all of which were co-directed by Keaton, show him emerging as a fully-formed film artist, demonstrating both his remarkable slapstick abilities as a performer, and sophisticated visual style as a filmmaker. The films in this collection are presented with orchestral scores by Frank Bockius, Neil Brand, Timothy Brock, Antonio Coppola, Stephen Horne, Robert Israel, The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Dennis Scott, and Donald Sosin

"Band leader Duke Taylor is intent on preventing the marriage of Floyd, his best friend and saxophonist, to taxi dancer Gloria, because he thinks Floyd is too good for her. Duke convinces the dance hall manager, Max, to fire Floyd, and then talks Floyd into taking a job in Pittsburgh. Gloria and Floyd continue to communicate despite their separation, while Gloria, determined to finally have a successful relationship, fends off the attentions of gangster Louie, her old flame. During the winter holiday season, Duke and Gloria become friends and spend all their free time together. Having once been romantically involved with Gloria, Duke again falls in love with her, but she remains steadfast in her loyalty to Floyd. In the meantime, Louie and Benny, the cigarette girl's brother, rob a local jeweler and kill him. Shortly before Floyd's return, Duke becomes drunk, and all the band members suspect that he and Gloria are having an affair. Floyd arrives early and catches Duke and Gloria in an innocent embrace. Unwilling to believe their innocence, Floyd breaks off his engagement, and a distraught Gloria agrees to travel to Mexico with Louie. Policemen arrive at the dance hall to arrest Louie, but he eludes them while holding Duke at gunpoint. Duke cleverly orders the band to play 'St. Louis Blues, ' Louie's favorite song, in order to alert the police to Louie's presence. When Duke tries to escape, Louie shoots him and then climbs out on a ledge and falls to his death. From his stretcher, Duke reassures Floyd as to Gloria's virtue, and the couple are reunited. The police captain in turn reassures Duke that he will survive his injury, and he smiles as the hour strikes midnight on New Year's Eve"--AFI catalog, 1931-1940
