Renaissance & reformation : German art in the age of Dürer and Cranach by Los Angeles County Museum of Art(
Book
)
7 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 306 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Featuring more than a hundred outstanding paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and treasures of the Age of the Reformation, this publication comprises masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger, Hans Holbein the Elder and Hans Holbein the Younger, Matthias Grünewald, and Tilman Riemenschneider, among others. By placing these works in their historical context, this beautifully illustrated book uses art as a prism through which to consider the religious, social and political upheavals of the time. The volume includes insightful texts that discuss pivotal subjects such as traditional imagery and devotion, Reformation and polemics, court life and culture, humanism and reality, as well as portraiture and representation. Biographies of the artists, an extensive bibliography and a glossary of central terms concerning the German Reformation make this a comprehensive study of a fascinating period in European art history

Im Tempel der Kunst : die Künstlermythen der Deutschen by
Alte Nationalgalerie (Berlin)(
Book
)
12 editions published in 2008 in German and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The 19th century was characterized by severe upheavals. In the visual arts, one of the richest changes involved the status of the artist, his self-understanding, his social integration. Each artist dreamed of fame "in the temple of art"--In museums and exhibitions. The artists formulated different roles in their own creations, such as self-portraits, images of friendship, studio views, or paintings which served mythic themes (Prometheus, Apollo). The artist might perceive himself as solitary, as in the case of Caspar David Friedrich, or as unrecognized, like Anselm Feuerbach, or as royalty, like Franz von Stuck. Perceptions of pathos and self-irony were influenced by historical models such as Giotto di Bondone, Raphael, and Dürer. The disintegration of old structures generated artistic groups of great importance, such as Nazarene art, the "Blue Rider," and Die Brücke

11 editions published in 2007 in German and Undetermined and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This publication presents what a wealth and surprising variety of paintings were produced in Europe between the French Revolution and World War I. The selection of about 150 masterpieces, ranging from Classicism to Romanticism and Realism, demonstrates how German painters examined very different themes from European history and literature, how they traveled throughout Europe, and ultimately how they influenced other countries with their artistic ideas: nineteenth-century German painting was European. Painting ranging from Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Caspar David Friedrich to Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann is the theme of this richly illustrated publication. Informative brief essays by known experts discuss first-class works from the three largest museum associations in the cities of Berlin, Dresden, and Munich, as well as twenty other important German collections, showing the perception of Europe at that time. An appendix contains extensive commentary on each individual painting. A synopsis of German history with a view to Europe rounds off this standard work on German nineteenth-century art
