Doubt and the demands of democratic citizenship by David R Hiley( )

13 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 921 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Can a skeptical way of life be a politically responsible life?" asks Hiley (U. of New Hampshire), believing that the affirmative answer to this philosophical question contains significant implications for the nature of democracy. He suggests that democracy and doubt can go together, but are best fit within the context of deliberative democracy, as opposed to liberalism or communitarianism. In making his case, he uses case studies of Socrates, Montaigne, and Rousseau to illustrate the qualities of doubt valuable for deliberative democracy. In the final chapter he takes up the topic of doubt and democratic education. Annotation #169;2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Richard Rorty. Contemporary Philosophy in Focus( )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arguably the most influential of all contemporary English-speaking philosophers, Richard Rorty has transformed the way many inside and outside philosophy think about the discipline and the traditional ways of practising it. Drawing on a wide range of thinkers from Darwin and James to Quine, Wittgenstein, Heidegger and Derrida, Rorty has injected a bold anti-foundationalist vision into philosophical debate, into discussions in literary theory, communication studies, political theory and education, and, as public intellectual, into national debates about the responsibilities of America in the modern world. The essays in this volume offer a balanced exposition and critique of Rorty's views on knowledge, language, truth, science, morality and politics. The editorial introduction presents a valuable overview of Rorty's philosophical vision. Written by a distinguished team of philosophers, this volume will have an unusual appeal outside philosophy to students in the social sciences, literary studies, cultural studies and political theory
Faculty Roles in Career Advising of Liberal Arts Students. Liberal Learning and Career Series by David R Hiley( Book )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Reasons for faculty participation in the career preparation of liberal arts students and strategies for promoting this involvement are considered. In addition, projects at colleges and universities that have succeeded in establishing partnerships between liberal arts faculty and career counselors are described. It is suggested that since liberal arts faculty have the earliest and closest contact with students, they are in a unique position to assist students in planning for work. Yet, a 1981 survey of Association of American Colleges member institutions revealed that only 18 percent had formal activities involving faculty in career advising, and this involvement usually was to pre-law and pre-medicine students. It is emphasized that students need to know that their liberal arts education provides them with skills that are associated with long-range career success. It is important for students to begin career consideration early, to choose between different types of occupations, to research an organization in preparation for an interview, and to be prepared to justify the relevance of their education. Barriers to faculty involvement in career advising and the process of implementing this change within the college are addressed. (Sw)
