Making the Amalgamated : gender, ethnicity, and class in the Baltimore clothing industry, 1899-1939 by Jo Ann E Argersinger( Book )

4 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jo Ann E. Argersinger examines both the interests that tended to unify workers and the forces that divided them. She studies the complex nature of union building itself, explores the seasonal cycles of the clothing industry as a whole, and places Baltimore and the ACW in national context, illustrating how local trends collided with national union politics. Argersinger draws from the strengths of the traditional approach to labor history. While offering a full account of institutional growth of the union movement, however, she also incorporates new insights, stressing labor's social context and the shifting influences of ethnicity, gender, and culture
The Triangle Fire : a brief history with documents by Jo Ann E Argersinger( Book )

4 editions published between 2009 and 2016 in English and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1911, a fire at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City claimed the lives of 146 workers, mainly young immigrant women, who either leaped to their deaths or were trapped in the blaze by locked doors and inadequate fire escapes. The tragedy brought national attention to the unsafe working conditions, long hours, and low pay that had prompted a national garment workers strike a year before. Jo Ann Argersinger's volume examines the context, trajectory, and impact of this Progressive Era event. An introduction explores the demands industrialization placed upon urban working women, their fight to unionize, and the Triangle fires significance in the greater scope of labor reform. Documents from newspaper reports to the personal stories of labor agitators and fire survivors continue the story, giving voice to the 'girl strikers, ' their enemies and upper-class allies in the effort to reform the garment industry, and the public outrage that followed the fire. Document headnotes, a chronology, questions for consideration, a selected bibliography, and an index enrich students understanding of this historical moment."

A comparative history of alternative ship procurement policies by Jo Ann E Argersinger( Book )

2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study provides a survey of major trends in shipbuilding procurement since the early 1950s, noting the persistence of certain problems and analyzing the adequacy of explanations for such problems. Particular attention is given to the systems DDG-2 and DE-1052 and the types of procurement that they represented in the 1950s and 1960s, respectively. Formally advertised and negotiated approaches to procurement are evaluated in light of a quantitative study made on these systems. It is shown, for example, that formal advertisement at least for the DE-1052 did not result in unusually low profilt margins in builders' bids, as has been traditionally assumed. Finally, suggestions are offered about procurement regulations and Navy - industry relations and objectives. (Author)
