"Hrdina této historie Justin, chudé záhřebské rodiny, žije svému ideálu státi se jednou zámožným obchodníkem. Ožení se před světovou válkou a založí si obchůdek, který chce vybudovat ve velkoobchod. Znenadání však přikvačí světová válka a vytrhne Justina i s kořeny z jeho práce. Justin je šikovný hoch, přizpůsobí se válečným poměrům, pustí se do keťasování, uskutečňuje tak svoji ideu zbohatlíka, příležitost k snadnému nabytí peněz byla velká. Lehce nabyté lehce pozbýval. Utrácel v pitkách a s lehkými dívkami v etapě za frontou, kde se jednoho dne i nakazil. Po válce se vrací, nedostatečně vyléčen a zplodí lehkomyslné děti. Chvílemi si uvědomuje strašnou odpovědnost za jejich zkažené zdraví a podléhá výčitkám svědomí. Je mravně příliš sláb k vyvodění důsledků ze svých hříchů. Pozbývá posléze i zájmu na svém prohraném životě a bídně zachází rozbit o úskalí své slabosti."--Book jacket
