The history of India, as told by its own historians. The Muhammadan period by H. M Elliot( Book )

156 editions published between 1855 and 2016 in English and held by 625 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This extensive eight-volume work was first published between 1867 and 1877 by the linguist John Dowson (1820-81) from the manuscripts of the colonial administrator and scholar Sir Henry Miers Elliot (1808-53). Before his death, hoping to bolster British colonial ideology, Elliot had intended to evaluate scores of Arabic and Persian historians of India, believing that his translations would demonstrate the violence of the Muslim rulers and 'make our native subjects more sensible of the immense advantages accruing to them under the mildness and the equity of our rule'. The collection is therefore not only valuable for its translation into English of many important extracts of sources from the ninth century to the nineteenth, but it also serves as a fascinating example of the use of historiography as a colonial tool

Sophisticated societies have risen and fallen in India for more than four millennia, from the urbanized Harappa culture to todays Republic of India, the worlds largest democracy. Because of its natural wealth, India has long been a tempting prize for invaders, yet foreign forces such as the Mughal Empire and the British did not destroy Indias vibrant spirit. Rather, external influences often became absorbed into the mix of different peoples, languages, religions, and regional traditions, creating a lasting culture of great depth. This book recounts the history of India and much of present-day Pakistan and Bangladesh as well as the factors that have contributed to Indias epic economic successes in recent times. Memorable images texture the narrative and vividly animate the story of this unique nation
