Firmin Gémier, héraut du théâtre populaire by
Catherine Faivre-Zellner(
Book
)
3 editions published in 2009 in French and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This work, which is founded upon Firmin Gémier'texts, tries to show how the french actor and director played a keyrole in the Théâtre National Populaire foundation. We first relate Gémier's life in historical and political context. Spokesman of the Revue d'Art Dramatique group,, Gémier creates a new art for a new world, the crowd theatre, which begins at the end of the XIXth century in the french provinces. With two precursors, Maurice Pottecher and Louis Lumet, Gémier imagines a new stage. Antoine's student, Gémier thinks it is a national stage rather a popular one. In 1911 and 1912, the Théâtre National Ambulant Gémier leaves on french roads. The foundation of the Théâtre National Populaire follows the french Third Republic history. In 1920, Firmin Gémier is the first director of the new national stage which is set up on misunderstandings between the creater and political decision-makers. We relate and analyse Gémier's T.N.P. which lastes fifteen years. Popular theatre needs new scenic forms. Gémier creates them like a craftsman, during all the time of his career, in a collective work which gives birth to the modern theater aesthetic
