Richard the Lionheart, King of England, entrusts his kingdom to his brother so he can go fight in the Crusades. The treacherous Prince John usurps the throne, oppresses the Saxons, and begins to collect exorbitant taxes. At a banquet in John's honor, Sir Robin of Locksley publicly denounces John, then escapes and hides in Sherwood Forest, where he and a band of like-minded men steal from the rich and give to the poor. One day, as John's allies, Guy of Gisbourne and the Sheriff of Nottingham, accompanied by the lovely Maid Marian, are riding through Sherwood, Robin (now known as Robin Hood) ambushes them, and seizes the tax money they are transporting. At first a captive, Marian comes to trust and love Robin. The group is released, but the enraged Sheriff proposes an archery tournament to lure Robin out of Sherwood. As he accepts the victory prize from Marian, Robin is seized and sentenced to hang., but Marian alerts his men, and he is rescued. Meanwhile, King Richard returns to discover his brother's treachery. At the castle, Gisbourne exposes Marian's allegiance to Robin and she is imprisoned. As John's coronation begins, King Richard, Robin and their men, dressed as monks, discard their disguises and attack. Gisbourne is killed by Robin, Richard is restored to his throne, John is banished. Robin's land and good name are restored, and he and Marian are given permission to marry
