The abbreviation of The introduction to astrology : together with the medieval Latin translation of Adelard of Bath by Abū Maʻshar( Book )

13 editions published in 1994 in English and Arabic and held by 157 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abu Ma'sar (787-886, known as Albumasar in Western Europe) was the best known astrologer of the Middle Ages in both the Islamic world and the Christian West. His most famous work was the "Great Introduction" to astrology, which was copied into numerous Arabic manuscripts, translated into Latin twice, and printed in the Renaissance. However, he himself made an abbreviation of this work, which summarized the astrological information in the larger work. This abbreviation survives in two Arabic manuscripts and a Latin translation made by Adelard of Bath in the early 12th century. This text contains the first edition of the abbreviation and the Latin translation, with English translations of both texts and several indexes. It should be of interest to cultural historians, as well as a useful introduction to medieval astrology

Studies in the history of the exact sciences in honour of David Pingree( Book )

1 edition published in 2004 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of essays reflects the wide range of David Pingree's expertise in the scientific texts (above all, concerning astronomy and astrology) of Ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, India, Persia, and the medieval Arabic, Hebrew and Latin traditions. Both theoretical aspects and the practical applications of the exact sciences-in time keeping, prediction of the future, and the operation of magic-are dealt with. The book includes several critical editions and translations of hitherto unknown or understudied texts, and a particular emphasis is on the diffusion of scientific learning from one culture to another, and through time. Above all, the essays show the variety and sophistication of the exact sciences in non-Western societies in pre-modern times
