The mystical doctrine of St. John of the Cross by John of the Cross( Book )

12 editions published between 1934 and 1953 in English and held by 192 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Apart from the introduction by Fr Steuart, The Mystical Doctrine of St John of the Cross consists wholly of passages from St John's own writings. It sets out in continous and convenient form all the essential points in his teachings. St John of the Cross was born near Avila in 1542 and dies at Ubeda in 1591. A Carmelite friar he was an enthusiastic supporter of St Teresa's campaign to restore the original and strict rule. His untiring work to spread the reform led to imprisonment, during which he wrote his first poem. He was canonized in 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926

An incomparable guide to the spiritual life because its author has lived his own counsel. Addressed to informed Christians who aspire to grow in union with God, it examines every category of spiritual experience, the spurious as well as the authentic. With rare insight into human psychology it not only tells how to become more closely united with God, but spells out in vivid detail the pitfalls to avoid
Living flame of love by John of the Cross( Book )

11 editions published between 1912 and 2012 in English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Because this is one of St. John of the Cross' last poems and the fruit of his mature spirituality, it is written with greater eloquence and ardor, impetuosity and lyrical fervor than his former works and tells of a love more completely refined and of a soul which has experienced nearly perfect union with God. Written in four stanzas, with a commentary on each stanze, the poem begins by describing a soul which seeks a closer intimacy with God. Through purgation of sense and spirit, this aspiring soul is now engaged in such profound contemplation of the Divine Love that it has already received a savor of eternal life; and this foretaste of the joy of heaven inspires it to a lyrical praise of the Trinity

In A Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ, St. John states: ""I do not purpose here to set forth all that greatness and fullness the spirit of love, which is fruitful, embodies in it. Yes, rather it would be foolishness to think that the language of love and the mystical intelligence - and that is what these stanzas are - can be at all explained in words of any kind, for the Spirit of our Lord who helps our weakness.""
