The 1672 edition in the Lane Library, published about one hundred years after the first, is the best edition. It was edited by Andreas Frisius, who compared the text of the 1644 Giunta edition against several manuscript copies. This edition was the first to contain the striking engraved title by the Dutch engraver Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), one of the finest artists and illustrators of the Baroque era. The engraving shows Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine, holding his characteristic staff with a single snake wound round it; he is pointing this at Bacchus, who lies sleeping on the ground with his donkey behind him. Standing behind Aesculapius is a female figure holding a five-pointed star; in the background are a stadium and an open field in which several athletes are engaged in various sports. The folding plates, which are unsigned, illustrate stadiums, battles between gladiators, and a naval battle staged in a flooded stadium. They are new to this edition. The dramatic woodcut illustrations, which were first used in the second edition of 1573, are by the celebrated Christophor Coriolano (circa 1540-circa 1600), an Italian artist of German ancestry; they represent some of the finest Italian cuts of the Mannerist period. The engraved title vignette is by Abraham Bloteling (1640-1690).--J. Norman, 2006
