Science-fiction : the Gernsback years : a complete coverage of the genre magazines ... from 1926 through 1936 by
E. F Bleiler(
)
7 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,092 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Complementing Science-Fiction: The Early Years, which surveys science-fiction published in book form from its beginnings through 1930, the present volume covers all the science-fiction printed in the genre magazines--Amazing, Astounding, and Wonder, along with offshoots and minor magazines--from 1926 through 1936. This is the first time this historically important literary phenomenon, which stands behind the enormous modern development of science-fiction, has been studied thoroughly and accurately. The heart of the book is a series of descriptions of all 1,835 stories published during this period, plus bibliographic information. Supplementing this are many useful features: detailed histories of each of the magazines, an issue by issue roster of contents, a technical analysis of the art work, brief authors' biographies, poetry and letter indexes, a theme and motif index of approximately 30,0000 entries, and general indexes. Science-Fiction: The Gernsback Years is not only indispensable for reference librarians, collectors, readers, and scholars interested in science-fiction, it is also of importance to the study of popular culture during the Great Depression in the United States. Most of its data, which are largely based on rare and almost unobtainable sources, are not available elsewhere. -- Provided by publisher

Science fiction writers : critical studies of the major authors from the early nineteenth century to the present day(
Book
)
11 editions published between 1998 and 1999 in English and held by 929 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Since 1982, when the first edition of Science Fiction Writers was published, many important writers have joined the pantheon of greats in the field. And in many cases new novels have changed a writers career or new historical discoveries demanded a significantly revised assessment of a writer. For example, not only has an unpublished manuscript by Jules Verne been discovered, but literary historians now suspect that his son may have written much of his work! Meanwhile, Jack Williamson, who started writing in 1926, has just published his finest novel. While retaining the best of this classic reference work, the editors have added 24 separate, completely new articles to the volume. In addition, all of the original articles have been updated or revised as necessary, from bibliographical updates to lengthy additions and in-depth rewrites

Supernatural fiction writers : contemporary fantasy and horror(
Book
)
13 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 597 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This two-volume set for high school students, college undergraduates, and teachers and other nonspecialists contains essays on 116 contemporary supernatural fiction writers whose prose the editor considers equal to, if not superior to, that of writers who have been granted mainstream acceptance. Entries are approximately seven to 12 pages in length and cover all aspects of each writer's career. They also address questions such as the literary value of these genres of fiction, and whether the science fiction or horror label discourages taking such work seriously. Each essay is followed by a bibliography of primary works, a critical and biographical bibliography citing books and articles, and lists of interviews and book reviews. Reference and research guide to mystery and detective fiction by
Richard Bleiler(
Book
)
12 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This new edition of Bleiler's popular and award-winning guide is a superb reference and research tool, as well as an invaluable aid to collection development. Evaluative reviews of approximately 1,000 reference works on mystery and detective fiction provide in-depth discussions of their contents, strengths, weaknesses, and usefulness, often comparing titles to similar or competing works. Encyclopedias, biographical dictionaries, genre guides, national bibliographies, media studies, general reader's guides, web sites, and organizations are just some of the information sources covered in this thorough source. All annotations from the previous edition have been reviewed, revised, and updated; and complete critical reviews of works published since the last edition have been added, including titles released in the present year (2003). More than one third of monographic citations are new to this edition. In a feature new to this edition, Bleiler indexes reference works that provide biographical information on mystery writers, and lists the key websites on these authors. More than 2500 bio-bibliographic citations to individual mystery writers are given-information that will be particularly useful to those researching specific authors. Organized by publication type for easy access, this work also features a detailed index, making it an essential guide for scholars, researchers, educators, readers' advisors, reference librarians, collection development specialists, and fans."--Jacket
