Ernest Hemingway's The killers by Don Siegel( Visual )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 213 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ernest Hemingway's simple but gripping short tale "The Killers" is a model of economical storytelling. Two directors adapted it into unforgettably virile features: Robert Siodmak, in a 1946 film that helped define the noir style; and Don Siegel, in a brutal 1964 version that was intended for television but deemed too violent for home audiences and released theatrically instead. The first is poetic and shadowy, the second direct and harsh as daylight, but both get at the heart of Hemingway's existential classic

Broadway--my way by Nancy Wilson( )

11 editions published between 1828 and 2006 in English and No Linguistic content and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The idea of pop and jazz singers doing show tunes is one of the most elementary. Nancy Wilson, who was one of the most consistently excellent vocal artists of the '50's and '60's, found the showtune format very appealing and made several albums of this material. Just as the songs themselves do double duty, so too do the re-interpretations by Nancy Wilson and Jimmy Jones. These treatments can either maintain the same mood that the songs did in their original contexts or sometimes Wilson and Jones subtly tinkered with the meaning of the songs in a way that one suspects the composers must have anticipated. Singers and arrangers can take the songs and provide them with a little something extra: a new tempo, a different groove, a Latin or a jazz accent that they never had on Broadway. Also, this collection of 17 songs acheives the almost impossible task of being specific and universal at the same time

Hollywood - my way by Nancy Wilson( )

10 editions published between 1963 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1963, Nancy Wilson, accompanied by musical director Jimmy Jones, made "Hollywood--My way", a follow-up to the previous year's "Broadway--My way" (an which was itself followed by the third My way album, "Today--My way", in 1965). In the 12 movie songs on the original album, as well as the five well-chosen additional songs included in this expanded CD edition, Ms. Wilson shows that there are some themes that are inseparable from the films that launched them. Ms. Wilson and Mr. Jones also show that the world of film songs is a level playing field, serious composers like Nicholas Brodsky (I'll never stop loving you) and Dimitri Tiomkin (Wild is the wind) never intended to write pop songs, yet their music competes with the best of the Broadway writers like Jerome Kern and Cole Porter. If this new, expanded edition "Hollywood-My way" makes one point, it's that the genre of movie music is as deep as it is varied, and there are as many different ways to interpret these songs as there are stars in Hollywood.--Condensed from Will Friedwald
