Laing var historisk interessert, samfunnsbevisst og opptatt av å finne ut mest mulig om folk og forhold i Norge. På reisa si og under opphaldet, ikkje mist mens han budde i Levanger og Verdal, skreiv han dagbok. I denne skildrar og kommenterer han alt han ser og observerer, og etter heimkomsten til Orknøyane i 1836 gav han ut dagboksnotatane.
