Jim Lewis, a locomotive engineer, takes the initiative to repair the track after a washout. Instead of a commendation, he is suspended because regulations were not followed. This and previous arbitrary rulings causes great discontent amongst employees. As a last resort before striking, they send Lewis to New York to reason with the company executives, especially "B" who signs the orders. Thinking this means Barker, the president, Lewis visits him first and finds a kindly, old gentleman with a very attractive daughter. It seems that Brown, the manager, is the villian, and he has just absconded with the company's cash. Lewis is sent after Brown, captures him, is promoted to executive and wins the girl

Dr. Hugh Annersley, who is working on a cure for cancer, is accused of murdering Griswold, a man who owed him money. Hugh's uncle, Dr. Appledan, has framed Hugh because Appledan killed Griswold, his patient, with a drug overdose. Julia, Hugh's sister, visits her uncle and learns that he has just told Frank Sergeant that Frank has only a short time to live and believes Frank will commit suicide. Julia follows Frank, prevents his suicide and convinces him to confess to Griswold's murder so that his death can save her brother and his research. Shortly before Frank is to be executed, he learns that he is not fatally ill. To save him, Julia goes to work on the case, finds out the truth and gets Appledan to confess just in time
