Contains twenty-five letters written by John Burroughs, West Park and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to his brother Hiram K. Burroughs, Roxbury, N.Y., 1888-1890. Letters discuss Hiram's financial difficulties, the management of his farm in Roxbury, and John's efforts to help him. Another group of nine letters were mostly written by John Burroughs to his readers, particularly Miss Wachschlager. This group includes a 1921 letter written by Clara Barrus (Burroughs' friend / literary executor / secretary) to Robert Underwood Johnson, the U.S. Ambassador to Italy at the time, discussing her writings on Burroughs and his illness. Additionally, the collection contains manuscript essays entitled, "The New Materialism" and "Primal Energies / Time & Change," along with a photograph of John Burroughs at "Slabsides," his cabin in West Park, N.Y
