Designed to fill an important void in oncology reference material by serving as a hands-on resource for the practicing oncologist. It was written exclusively by MD Anderson faculty and fellows with the idea of presenting a bird's eye view of medical oncology as it is currently practiced at that institution. While definitely written from the perspective of the medical oncologist, this book clearly emphasizes MD Anderson's multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. Furthermore, while evidence-based rationales are given for patient care strategies, no apologies are offered for articulating the unique perspectives and biases as they apply to cancer biology and therapy as practiced at this top-rated cancer center. The rationales for ongoing clinical trials are clearly articulated as well as the importance of ongoing clinical investigation

BREAST CANCER is the first volume of The MD Anderson Cancer Care Series, featuring the best standard treatment protocols from the experts at MD Anderson Cancer Center. As more is learned about the relative roles of different treatment modalities, a pattern of practice is emerging where several different disciplines are involved early in the diagnostic and treatment phases of breast cancer. The impact of new and established diagnostic approaches that utilize radiodiagnosis and pathology in combination are requiring that a full range of special expertise from these disciplines be made available to patients. This clinical guidebook is an essential resource for the busy practioner, allowing for quick, authoritative access to the latest and best in multimodality therapies. Topics covered in this volume include screening for early detection of breast cancer, hereditary breast/ovarian cancer genetic sydromes, diagnostic radiology, ultrasonography, pathology, surgical options, radiation therapy for early and advanced breast disease, tumor markers, standard and high-dose chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, reconstructive surgery, post-treatment rehabilitation, and symptom management and quality of life. Over 125 photographs and line-drawings illustrate the principles discussed in the text. This handbook will become an important guide and resource for community oncologists, as well as general surgeons, internists, and family practioners
MD Anderson manual of psychosocial oncology by James D Duffy( Book )

3 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"During the past two decades, very significant advances have been made in our understanding and treatment of the psychosocial consequences of cancer. The standard of care in clinical oncology now includes recognition of the psychosocial consequences of cancer, treatment of psychiatric syndromes associated with the disease, and relief of bio-psycho-social-spiritual distress and suffering common to the cancer experience for patients and caregivers. Because the scope of the problem is great and the number of dedicated psycho-oncologists is few, comprehensive cancer care is not delivered by specialists alone. Primary oncologists of all disciplines and the growing interdisciplinary subspecialty of psycho-oncology has done much to help establish this standard of care and to develop a research and clinical framework to support it. Psychosocial oncology is not just another subspecialty. It represents a philosophy of care that seeks to bring together the interdisciplinary team working together to address the particular needs of a patient, family, and community. Implementing such a care delivery model in the culture of our current high technology hierarchical healthcare systems can be a real challenge. However, these barriers cannot be allowed to prevent the implementation of a person-centered model of care that has been demonstrated to improve patient outcomes, decrease costs, and enhance healthcare professional satisfaction. Oncology and psychosocial oncology should take a leadership role in developing and championing this model of healthcare"--Provided by publisher

Making cancer history : disease and discovery at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center by James Stuart Olson( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The history of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center vividly reveals how cancer treatment in America and our attitudes toward the disease has changed since the middle of the twentieth century. One of the preeminent cancer centers in the world, M. D. Anderson is also one of the first medical institutions devoted exclusively to caring for people with cancer and researching treatments and cures for the disease. Historian James S. Olson?s narrative relates the story of the center?s founding and of the surgeons, radiologists, radiotherapists, nurses, medical oncologists, scientists, administrators, and patients who built M. D. Anderson into the world-class institution it is today. Through interviews with M. D. Anderson?s leaders and patients, Olson brings to life the struggle to understand and treat cancer in America. A cancer survivor who has himself been treated at the center, Olson imbues this history with humor, passion, and humanity.--Amazon.com
