The Quality of life by Martha Craven Nussbaum( Book )
22 editions published between 1992 and 2009 in English and Chinese and held by 1,481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The idea of the quality of life is central to economic and social assessment and also to public policy, social legislation, and community programmes. However, the commonly used indicators of economic success such as per capita income are at best crude measures of the quality of life. There is a strong need for a systematic exploration of the content, reach, and relevance of the concept of the quality of life, and ways of making it concrete and usable. In this collection of essays, some leading economists and philosophers rise to that challenge and provide a wide-ranging investigation." "The essays include examination of recent attempts to replace incomes and utilities by the concept of capability and also exploration of the classic Aristotelian accounts of human flourishing, which provide insights into capability-based assessment of the quality of life. Some underlying methodological problems are also examined, including cultural relativism and utility as a measure of advantage. Possibilities of application are discussed in the context of important practical problems, such as correcting gender-based inequalities, determining medical priorities, and promoting living standards. The overall result is a major contribution to the understanding and use of the idea of the quality of life."--Jacket
Women, culture, and development : a study of human capabilities by Martha Craven Nussbaum( Book )
14 editions published between 1994 and 2007 in English and held by 1,320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This examination of women's quality of life thus addresses questions which have a particular urgency. It aims to describe the basic situation of all women and so develops a universal account that can answer the charges of 'Western imperialism' frequently made against such accounts. The contributors confront the issue of cultural relativism, criticizing the relativist approach which, in its desire to respect different cultural traditions, can result in indifference to injustice. An account of gender justice and women's equality is then proposed in various areas in which quality of life is measured. These issues are related throughout to the specific contexts of India, Bangladesh, China, Mexico, and Nigeria through a series of case studies. Disciplines represented include philosophy, economics, political science, anthropology, law, and sociology

Human well-being is a core global issue. Achieving and sustaining higher levels of well-being is challenge for individual citizens, governments and international organisations world-wide. Measures of human well-being levels are an integral part of this process, being used increasingly to monitor and evaluate conditions within and among countries. Not only has the number of indicators of human well-being increased appreciably in recent years, but demands that they capture more fully progress in the various dimensions of human well-being have also increased. A key demand is that these indicators need to more fully capture the non-economic dimensions of well-being. This book provides insights into how human well-being might be better measured, by undertaking conceptual and empirical research into the assessment of achieved human well-being. It does this by taking stock of and reviewing various concepts and measures and providing recommendations for future practice and research

Personal wealth from a global perspective by World Institute for Development Economics Research( Book )
8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"There is great media fascination in the activities and lifestyles of the super-rich. But personal wealth is also important for those of more modest means - as a store of potential consumption, as a cushion against emergencies, and as collateral for business and investment loans. This book is the first global study of household assets and debts. It documents not only the level, distribution, and trend of wealth holdings in rich nations, but also addresses developing countries like China and India. The situation in Latin America and Africa is given attention along with the experiences of Russia and other transition countries. Components of household wealth like financial assets, land, and property are examined, as well as the gender division. Worldwide, it is estimated that the richest 2% own more than half of total global wealth, and that this group resides almost exclusively in North America, Western Europe, and rich Asia-Pacific countries."--BOOK JACKET
