Our Future is in Our Children: The Case for Early Childhood Care and Education. Notes, Comments... (Child, Family, Community). Digest No. I by Veda Prakasha( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This digest attempts to present the main arguments in favor of early childhood education and care as a high priority area of educational development. The digest also tries to delineate the present "state of the art" of early childhood education and care. The digest has two foci, expressed as two clusters of questions: (1) What does the term "preschool education" mean? Is it different from early childhood care? How can it be seen in its most meaningful relationship to primary education? And (2) Why has there recently been an upsurge of concern about early childhood education and care? Is the upsurge just a flash in the pan or are there weightier considerations in support of the interest, such as the view that preschooling is a critical phase in the development of the human personality? What exactly is the case for preschool education? The digest concludes with recommendations from a number of international and regional seminars held in various parts of the world during the 1970s and early 1980s. These recommendations present a view of the major concerns and principal priorities as perceived by national professionals and also suggest concrete courses of action. (Rh)

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The digest also seeks to highlight the importance of community participation in developing and managing preschool institutions and programs. Chapters cover the following topics: the overall scene; the case for preschooling; qualitative improvement with the possibility of cost reduction; measuring the quality of preschool education; improving management of early childhood care and education; improving institutional and program management by means of community participation; developmental research, with case studies from Malaysia and Turkey; the need to strengthen monitoring and evaluation; the "central message," or main conclusions, of efforts to develop more relevant and culturally sensitive forms of early childhood education, with two examples: an experimental Colombian effort at cooperative child care in the community; and the Indian experience with Balwadis. The final chapter briefly discusses various possible roles that international aid might play in the creation and development of viable, culturally sensitive preschool education programs in developing countries. Extending Basic Learning Opportunities: Challenge and Response. Unesco-Unicef Co-Operative Programme Digest No. 16 by Veda Prakasha( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This digest focuses on problems encountered in the expansion of facilities for universal primary education and responses being developed to overcome these problems. The digest contains 10 chapters divided among 4 sections. Introductory materials in Section I address the concept of universal primary education and the meaning of nonformal education. Topics discussed in Section ii concern experiences of several countries, including Bangladesh, India, and Kenya, in implementing nonformal education. Also discussed are criteria for the identification of nonformal educational programs. Section iii concerns the education of girls and women. Section iv covers general principles of community participation, presents a case study from the Caribbean on community participation, and explores ways of tapping community resources for construction of primary school buildings. Two appendixes are included. Appendix I offers the text of relevant sections of UNESCO's Second Medium Term Plan (1984-1989). 1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This digest explores the question, What types of activities and experiences should a good learning environment offer to the young child to help him grow normally and happily? Part 1 focuses on basic considerations in the development of early childhood care and education (ecce) curricula. Four chapters concern: (1) the learning needs of the young child; (2) the centrality of the child's spontaneous activity; (3) play and playthings; and (4) early instruction. Part 2 deals with methodological considerations relevant to early childhood interventions. Conceptual aspects of learning, the preschool teacher, parent-school cooperation in a changing society, and teaching and learning methods appropriate to ecce are discussed. The third part concerns facilities, equipment, and materials. Topics include buildings, books and other printed materials, audiovisual materials, furniture, and children's health and development records and related materials. Part 4 presents ideas to be considered in the process of changing the preschool curriculum, particularly in the move from a curriculum based on teaching to one based on learning. Also considered are the teacher-researcher relationship, a 6-step curriculum model, and criteria for designing an open learning environment. (Rh)
