Watercraft waste treatment system development and demonstration report by Arnold J Bryce ( Book )
2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A shipboard sewage treatment system consisting of: Comminution of solids for ease of transport and further treatment; Electro coagulation of sewage for ease of removal of suspended solids; Solids separation; Soluble BOD reduction with carbon adsorption; Coliform bacteria removal; and Solids incineration was designed to process shipboard sanitary, culinary, and laundry wastes during prolonged sea trials. Advantages of the electrochemical system are given. Waste stream characterization showed the BOD and suspended solids levels of shipboard wastes to be 2 to 3 times the concentrations common to municipal wastes. The development program was successful in demonstrating a practical and economically viable electro-chemical treatment system
Shipboard oil-in-water content monitor based on small angle forward light scattering by E Batutis ( Book )
2 editions published between 1974 and 1975 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Further development of an on line Oil-in-Water Content Monitor is presented. The basic techinque of optical scattering monitoring has been maintained. Performance verification in various test situations was conducted. Interferences such as particulate matter, gravity, pH of water, salinity of water, and temperature of water were investigated; the only serious interference being small particulate matter. Effects of oil droplet size, detergents and type of oil on monitor performance were also investigated. At its present level of development the monitor will produce errors of less than + or - 10% within a single oil type at 125 PPM level. At the same level, errors less than + or - 14% can be expected from oil mixtures without Bunker C. Oil mixtures including Bunker C produced an error band of + or - 33%

A study of the effects of detergents on typical bilge waters and correlation of oil particle sizes by E Batutis ( Book )
2 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Oil removal systems for treating bilge water are drastically affected by the condition, composition, and character of the incoming bilge water-oil mixture. The presence of various detergents and cleansers causes emulsification of hydrocarbon products already present. The extent of emulsification caused by synthetic detergents on eight oils was studied at a fixed agitation rate and intensity as a function of detergent type (cationic, anionic, or non-ionic) and concentration as well as temperature, pH and salinity of the continuous (external) phase (distilled water). Laboratory test emulsions were generated using ultrasonic agitation, coupled with high speed non-aerating dispersion to simulate the type of emulsions produced by action of a centrifugal pump. A HIAC Particle Counter was used to determine the amount of oil emulsified. The conclusions indicated that: (1) Detergents with cationic-active ingredients would promote a higher degree of emulsification than those with non-ionic or anionic type surfactants. (2) The amount of oil emulsified under fixed agitation rate and intensity and fixed oil concentration does not increase proportionally with increasing detergent concentrations. (3) The concentration of emulsified oil tends to approach a nearly constant value with increasing detergent concentration. (4) at low concentrations of detergent, 100 ppm, the effect of some detergents seems to be one of de-emulsification. An appendix is included in this report covering a correlation of particle size data generated by a number of investigators. (Author)

An Experiment to Correlate Strumming and Fishbite Events on Deep Ocean Moorings by Eric J Softley ( Book )
1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
A deep water experiment was designed to provide information on the correlation between cable fishbite and cable strumming. Two moorings, one with anti-strumming fairings and one without, with subsurface floats were deployed in 1870 m of water in the Tongue of the Ocean. Data on cable damage in the upper half of the mooring cable and strumming at the top of the cable were collected over the three month deployment period. While lack of fishbites prevented any conclusions on fishbite causes, strumming data for long faired and unfaired cables in the ocean was obtained. Data on strumming was also obtained from auxiliary experiments
