An introduction to the dance of India, China, Korea [and] Japan by Beate Gordon( Book )

4 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The general aim of this booklet is to assist those who desire to increase their knowledge and appreciation of Asian cultures and, more specifically, to provide an additional dimension to the Asia Society's Dance Demonstration Program. Dance history, philosophical ideas of religion, accompanying rituals, the relationship of dance to music, and roles and styles of today are briefly described and traced for each of the countries of India, China, Korea, and Japan. The artistic interchange and transmission of dance-form from one culture to another in each country is emphasized. The last section compares Asian and Western dance, focussing on differences in attitudes and performances. (Sjm)
Last boat to Yokohama : the life and legacy of Beate Sirota Gordon by Nassrine Azimi( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1946, a remarkable woman secretly helped create Japan's new constitution, writing an article that mandated equal rights for all women in Japan. Few could imagine that Article 24 was the work of a 22-year-old Vienna-born, naturalized American woman of Ukrainian-Jewish descent who had gown up in Japan. Her name was Beate Sirota, and to this day she remains an idol for generations of Japanese women. This extraordinary biography includes a foreword by Beate, an in-depth look at her father, the world-renowned classical pianist Leo Sirota, personal diaries from the World War II era by her mother, Augustine, as well as a detailed overview of Beate's life, including the ongoing impact of her contributions to the Japanese constitution, as well as her personal impact on world culture fostered by four decades of dedication to introducing authentic dance, theater, and music of the Far East to American audiences"--Page 4 of cover

Le dernier bateau pour Yokohama : les Sirota, une odyssée politique et culturelle by Michel Wasserman( Book )

2 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in French and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The only woman in the room : a memoir by Beate Gordon( Book )

5 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A vivid and very personal account of one woman's life in Europe, prewar Japan, and the United States. As the daughter of renowned Russian pianist Leo Sirota, Beate Gordon grew up in the cosmopolitan world of the concert tour, then settled in Japan in the 1930s. During World War II, while her parents remained in Japan under secret service surveillance, Gordon lived alone in the United States, monitoring Tokyo Radio in five languages for the government and later writing radio propaganda. She recounts her dramatic reunion with her parents in Tokyo, where she worked in General MacArthur's headquarters, and evokes the postwar suffering in defeated Japan. Her intimate description of helping draft the women's rights section of Japan's new constitution is an astonishing record of history in the making. On returning to the States in 1947, Mrs. Gordon became a cultural impresario, bringing artists, dancers, writers, and musicians from all over to the United States. Her adventures in search of performing artists in such remote and exotic places as Mongolia, Tibet, India, and Indonesia make for hilarious and sometimes hair-raising anecdotes
