Commentary on the management of fish habitat in northern Canada : information requirements and policy considerations regarding diamond, oil sands and placer mining - literature search by Nuzrat Yar Khan( Book )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A comprehensive search and assessment of pertinent literature was conducted to determine deficiencies in knowledge with respect to fish and their habitat in northern Canada. Particular emphasis was placed on regions where diamond mining is occurring because of the need to assess the importance of fish habitat that will be affected and to address mitigation, compensatory and restorative measures. This document comprises details of literature searches for a review of the biology and ecology of selected fish species in Arctic Canada. It includes information on various aspects of the biology and ecology of seven species of fish commonly found in streams and lakes of the Lac de Gras watershed of the Northwest Territories. The search also included aspects of watershed ecology, cumulative effects of habitat change, and habitat compensation and restoration strategies
Survey of selected streams for sensitivity to acidification from the proposed Hat Creek coal development by Canada( Book )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thirty-two Pacific salmon streams located downwind of theproposed B.C. Hydro coal-fired electric generating plant at HatCreek (south central British Columbia) were sampled for pH, alkalinity and metals between 1981 and 1983. Eight of thestreams sampled were found to have alkalinities below 200microequivalents per litre for part of the year, including: BlueRiver, Boss Creek, Crazy Creek, Crooked Creek, Finn Creek, RaftRiver, Seymour River and Adams River (above Adams Lake). The pHand alkalinity values of two rivers (Raft and Eagle) duringsnowmelt were depressed coincident with spring freshet. Buffercapacities were calculated for 14 streams with low alkalinities

Commentary on the management of fish habitat in northern Canada : information requirements and policy considerations regarding diamond, oil sands and placer mining - summary report by I. K Birtwell( Book )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This summary is derived from a detailed technical report which identifies scientific and management information needs that are necessary in order to make consistent and defensible decisions which conform with the intent of the "Policy for the Management of Fish Habitat" ("Habitat Policy", Department of Fisheries and Oceans 1986), and that assist with the facilitation of responsible mining activities compliant with the Fisheries Act. The project was stimulated by increasing mining activities in northern Canada. Compensation and restoration for the destruction of lake and stream habitats pose significant scientific and management challenges, especially so in northern Canada where ecological knowledge and understanding are rudimentary
