Sleigh had led a series of discussions asserting the truth of Christianity and divine revelation. Those addressed in this letter had written something that Offen "recently observed in the papers, your names attached" (cf. prelims.) in support of the adequacy of Sleigh's arguments. Offen and Bacheler refute those views in this letter, pointing out what they consider to be many weaknesses in Sleigh's presentation

The Family magazine, or, Weekly abstract of general knowledge ( )
in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Founded as a weekly by Origen Bacheler in 1833, the Family Magazine was one of the "knowledge" magazines and was an imitation on Knight's Penny Magazine of London. Written in a popular style, it was filled with "systematic courses of general knowledge" in many branches and was rather copiously illustrated with wood-cuts. It was made a monthly in June, 1834. At first it focused mainly on astronomy, mythology, natural science, biography, and "wonders of the world", such as unusual buildings, towers, and mountains, but later expanded its range of topics to include articles on famous people and places, on New York City and State, and on geology, botany, history, and literature. A farmer's department was added and poetry and literary notices were also included. The Family Magazine is expecially valuable for its many woodcuts of towns, cities, and buildings, which give a good picture of how they looked in the early 1800s. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900
Papers by Origen Bacheler ( )
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
In the years between Texas independence and outbreak of the Mexican-American War, Bacheler (1800-1848) and the New York Peace Society worked vigorously to promote peaceful relations between Mexico and the U.S. and between Mexico and France. The papers document Bacheler's activities as corresponding secretary of the society and include an essay, or speech on war, the second annual report of the society (manuscript), a petition (printed) to Congress proposing arbitration between Mexico and France, and letters received from John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Juan de la Granja, Juan Nepomuceno Almonte and other officials thanking Bacheler for his efforts towards peace; in particular, Adams (1838 Nov. 19) states that while he respects the work of the Society he cannot participate in society activities as he represents the whole nation and not individual factions. Letters from the Union Literary and Debating Society request Bacheler to lecture and then thank him for having done so. In the collection is a partial genealogy of the Bacheler family and a photograph of Charlotte Wright Thompson Bacheler
