Sigmar Polke : works on paper 1963-1974 by Margit Rowell( Book )

18 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 475 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sigmar Polke's thirty-five-year career, during which he has produced a vast range of work in all mediums, has earned him a reputation as one of the most significant artists of his generation. Born in 1941, he began his creative output around 1963 in Dusseldorf during a time of enormous social, cultural, and artistic changes in Germany and elsewhere. Few of his works demonstrate more vividly his imagination, sardonic wit, and subversive approach than the drawings, watercolors, and gouaches produced during the 1960s and early 1970s. Embedded in these images are incisive and parodic commentaries on consumer society, the postwar political scene in Germany, and classic artistic conventions." "This book is published to accompany the first American museum exhibition of Polke's drawings from this period, shown at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1999. More than 300 works are illustrated, virtually all of them in color. They include small sketches in ballpoint and felt-tipped pen, larger sheets in watercolor and gouache, and still others stamped with a dot screen process."--Jacket
Hans Bellmer by Hans Bellmer( Book )

20 editions published in 2006 in German and English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Surrealists' fascination for dolls and machines resembling humans is especially evident in the work of Hans Bellmer (1902-1975). Rejecting the Nazis' Aryan ideals, the artist began creating disturbing dolls from wax, wood, flax, plaster and glue in 1933. This comprehensive monograph, containing new analytical essays by curators Agnes de la Beaumelle and Alain Sayag, and historian Weiland Schmied, as well as a detailed chronology of the artist's life, provides insight into the work of this master of Surrealism."--BOOK JACKET

Painting on paper : Josef Albers in America by Josef Albers( Book )

11 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication presents a wealth of in part unknown colored works on paper by Josef Albers (1888-1976), documented for the first time. It was not until the German-born artist emigrated to the U.S. that he emerged as a prominent artist and influential teacher. Beginning in about 1940, Albers allowed himself to be inspired by Mexico's pre-Columbian architecture, sculpture and textile art, which led to a liberation of his aesthetic sensibilities and to unconventional, radiant pitches of color, the likes of which modern painting in Europe had never seen before. In ca. 1950, he discovered the square, in his eyes the ideal form for color. He was both a resolute painter as well as a color philosopher. Each of the works on paper presented here arouses a sensuous fascination for the phenomenality of color

Dürer to de Kooning : 100 master drawings from Munich by Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München( Book )

4 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich houses one of the finest and most famous collections of drawings and prints in Germany, with holdings of around 400,000 works ranging from the fifteenth century to modernity. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York, 100 Master Drawings from Munich comprises lush full-color illustrations of over one hundred of the museum's works of art. Demonstrating the impressive depth and breadth of works owned by the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, the works in this volume range from rough preparatory sketches to meticulously executed studies and encompass a variety of media, including silverpoint, chalk, ink, and aquarelle. Among the many extraordinary pieces are Old Dutch and German prints, nineteenth-century German drawings, and works by Dürer and Rembrandt. But equally not to be missed are the many compelling works of contemporary graphic art for which the museum is best known

Philip Guston : prints : catalogue raisonné by Philip Guston( Book )

7 editions published in 2015 in English and German and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When Philip Guston turned to the medium of lithography in the early sixties, he was regarded as one of the leading figures of Abstract Expressionism in the United States. At that time, his art was already showing signs of the change that would lead to the later representational works that dominated the last decade of his career. The impressive series of black-and-white lithographs that Guston made shortly before his death in 1980 incorporates, as a sort of visual autobiography, the complete repertoire of objects that marked his return to powerful pictorial representation: simple everyday items, clocks, shoes, books, cigarettes, ashtrays, and occasionally his beloved sandwiches and cherries. All of these things, taken from the world of the private and intimate, are given a unique vitality by Guston's ironic eye and deliberate hand in the soft cadences of the lithographic crayon. This superb-quality illustrated book is the first publication to present Guston's complete printed oeuvre. Fifty-nine exquisite reproductions showcase a printmaker who--along with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning--was one of the leading American artists of the twentieth century"--Provided by publisher
P.P.P., Pier Paolo Pasolini : Pier Paolo Pasolini and death by Pier Paolo Pasolini( Book )

7 editions published in 2005 in English and German and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
