The nationalities question in the post-Soviet states by G. (ed.) Smith( Book )

11 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most enduring features in the modern history of Northern Eurasia has been the nationalities question. Not only did the resurgence of nationalism in the late 1980s prove pivotal to the ending of the twentieth century's last empire, the Soviet Union, but it has remained central in reshaping the politics, social structures and cultures of the post-Soviet states. Given the scale of political change and ethnic tensions, there has never been such a critical time in the recent history of Northern Eurasia in which it is so crucial to understand the identities of those peoples who now form the core cultures of the post-Soviet states, as well as those ethnic minorities whose status's have been redefined as a result of the redrawing of the geopolitical map. It focuses on the major developments in the region since 1991 and includes a number of Northern Eurasian nationalities not previously covered. Under the editorship of Graham Smith this international panel of authors presents a work which: - boasts unrivalled systematic and authoritative coverage of the major nationalities of Northern Eurasia, accounting for more than 90% of the population, - locates each nationality within its appropriate historical, geopolitical and cultural context, - analyses how national and ethnic relations are being reshaped in the post-Soviet states in relation to issues of state-building, the reconstruction of post-Soviet national identities, citizenship and language policies, - includes a statistical appendix of comparative socio-economic and demographic date on the nationalities. Nation-building in the post-Soviet borderlands : the politics of national identities by Graham Smith( Book )

13 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 534 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The emergence in 1991 of the fourteen borderland post-Soviet states has been accompanied by the reforging of their national identities. Such attempts to rethink or reimagine the nation have had a major impact in reshaping the political, cultural and social lives of both national and ethnic minority groups alike. This book analyzes these national identities and explores their consequences for the borderland states, with substantive studies drawn from the Baltic states, Ukraine and Belarus, Transcaucasia and Central Asia

"The collapse of the Soviet Union has engendered one of the most momentous and critical regional transformations of our times through formation and development of the post-Soviet states. The Baltic States : the national self-determination of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania by Graham Smith( Book )

32 editions published between 1994 and 2016 in English and held by 520 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1991, following the break-up of the Soviet Union, the three small Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania rejoined the world community of nation-states. This struggle for national self-determination was not new, however: indeed, for the Baltic peoples, it has been a recurring theme throughout the twentieth century. In the first part of this book we examine the development of this national awakening and the establishment of these nation-states during the interwar years, and how, despite loss of independence, fifty years of incorporation into the Soviet Union did not mean an end to national dissent. In the second part we examine the more recent transition towards Baltic national self-determination, the role that local nationalisms played in this resurgence, and the problems that all three countries now face in having resecured their political status as sovereign states
