Feminist art criticism : an anthology by Arlene Raven( Book )

15 editions published between 1988 and 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 861 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The essays in Feminist Art Criticism are theoretical, and we selected them for several reasons. First, they show a diversity of concerns. These include spirituality, sexuality, the representation of women in art, the necessary inter-relationship of theory and action, women as artmakers, ethnicity, language itself, so-called postfeminism and critiques of hte art world, the discipline of art history and the practice of art criticism. Second, the contributors' work has not been either widely disseminated or readily available. Third, the essays, especially arranged as they are (chronologically), demonstrate a continuous feminist discourse in art from the early 1970s through the present, a discourse that is neither monolithic nor intellectually trendy but that rather exhibits many elements, the polemical, Marxist, lyrical, and poststructuralist being only a few." -- Preface

A feminist critique : how feminism has changed American society, culture, and how we live from the 1940's to the present by Cassandra L Langer( Book )

7 editions published between 1996 and 2001 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning in the 1940s with Hollywood's image of the American woman, this book goes on to discuss images of home, family, and domesticity in the 1950s and the impact of Betty Friedan's The Feminist Mystique on the 1960s generation. Next, it examines the 1970s, the so-called golden age of American feminism, including sexual politics and reactionary rhetoric about lesbians and women who didn't follow the party line. Antifeminist cultural discourses on women's rights. Includes Susan Faludi's Backlash, are discussed in relation to abortion, equal pay for equal work, and other political, social, and cultural issues. The book assesses the highly charged sexual politics of the 1990s using the writings of Camilla Paglia, Naomi Wolf, and Katie Roiphe to analyze different levels of postfeminism. With examples from the mass media, film, literature, popular culture, art, and art criticism, this book surveys the impact of the American feminist. Movement, how it originated, why certain ideas and images had to change and how this movement shaped our notions of feminine and masculine over the last fifty years. A Feminist Critique is a fair and much-needed overview of the accomplishments, issues, and goals of the feminist movement and its future course
Romaine Brooks : a life by Cassandra L Langer( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The artistic achievements of Romaine Brooks (1874?1970), both as a major expatriate American painter and as a formative innovator in the decorative arts, have long been overshadowed by her fifty-year relationship with writer Natalie Barney and a reputation as a fiercely independent, aloof heiress who associated with fascists in the 1930s. In Romaine Brooks: A Life, art historian Cassandra Langer provides a richer, deeper portrait of Brooks?s aesthetics and experimentation as an artist?and of her entire life, from her chaotic, traumatic childhood to the enigmatic decades after World War II, when she produced very little art. This provocative, lively biography takes aim at many myths about Brooks and her friends, lovers, and the subjects of her portraits, revealing a woman of wit and passion who overcame enormous personal and societal challenges to become an extraordinary artist and create a life on her own terms. Romaine Brooks: A Life introduces much fresh information from Langer?s decades of research on Brooks and establishes this groundbreaking artist?s centrality to feminism and contemporary sexual politics as well as to visual culture

Original Sin : [exhibition] January 16-March 3, 1991 : Hillwood Art Museum( Book )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 79 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"[Original Sin] was conceived as a visual exploration initiated from a feminist perspective. The focus was to take a provacative look at the impact and influence of the character of Eve ... 'Original Sin' attempts to percieve the narrative of Eve as a symbol of woman in contemporary art. The exhibit operates on two levels. One concentrates on images that reckon directly with Genesis and the Eve character. The other takes the persona of Eve as a springboard. If Eve is considered the first woman, then succeeding visualizations which illuminate the condition of women can claim a lineage traceable back to Eve."--Mary Ann Wadden, page 3
