Japan's modern divide : the photographs of Hiroshi Hamaya and Kansuke Yamamoto by Hiroshi Hamaya( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 332 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This title offers an illustrated overview of the evolution of two very different strains of modern Japanese photography. In the 1930s, Japanese photography evolved in two very directions: one toward a documentary style, the other favouring an experimental, or avant-garde, approach strongly influence by Western Surrealism. This book explores these two divergent paths through the work of two remarkable figures: Hiroshi Hamaya and Kansuke Yamamoto. Hiroshi Hamaya (1915-1999) was born and raised in Tokyo and, after an initial period of creative experimentation, turned his attention to recording traditional life and culture. He went on to record cultural changes in China, political protests in Japan, and landscapes around the world. Kansuke Yamamoto (1914-1987) became fascinated by the innovative approaches in art and literature exemplified by Western artists such as Man Ray and Magritte. 0Exhibition: Getty Museum, Los Angeles, USA (26.3.-25.8.2013). 0

The Japanese photobook 1912-1990( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book illustrates the development of photography as seen in photo publications in Japan - from the time of influence by European and American pictorialism, the German Bauhaus and Imperial military propaganda, to the complete collapse and destruction of the country in 1945. Then followed a new beginning: with the unique self-determination of a young generation of photographers and visual artists highlighted by the "Provoke" style as well as protest and war documentation of the late 1950s to the early '70s, the signature Japanese photobook, as we have come to know it, was born.0With detailed information and illustrations of over 400 photo publications, an introduction by Kaneko Ryuichi and essays by Fujimura Satomi, Duncan Forbes, Manfred Heiting, Mitsuda Yuri, Lizawa Kotaro, Shirayama Mari and Matthew S. Witkovsky, this is the first extensive English-language survey of Japanese photobooks of this period

The Japanese Photobook, 1912-1980 by Ryūichi Kaneko( Book )

3 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and Japanese and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'The Japanese Photobook, 1912-1990' illustrates the development of photography as seen in photo publications in Japan -- from the early influence of European and American pictorialism, the German Bauhaus and imperial military propaganda to the complete collapse and destruction of the country in 1945. Then followed a new beginning: with the unique self-determination of a young generation of photographers and visual artists highlighted by the Provoke style -- an experimental Japanese photography magazine that had a profound effect on the medium in the 1970s and '80s -- as well as protest and war documentation of the late 1950s to the early '70s, the signature Japanese photobook, as we have come to know it, was born. The volume features such photographers as Yoshio Watanabe, Akira Hoshi, Hayao Yoshikawa, Shinichi Kato, Yasuo Wakuda, Tetsuo Kitahara, Moriyama Daido, Koji Taki, Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Kimura Ihei, Hamaya, Katura, Kazano, Kikuti, Mituzumi, Watanabe, Yamahata, Sozo Okada and Kazano Karuo, among many others. With detailed information and illustrations of over 400 photo publications, an essay by Ryuichi Kaneko, the leading historian of Japanese photobooks, and contributions from Duncan Forbes, Matthew S. Witkovsky and others, this is the most extensive English-language survey of Japanese photobooks of this period. -- publisher's statement
