Kitchener's army : the raising of the new armies, 1914-16 by Peter Simkins( Book )

21 editions published between 1988 and 2014 in English and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Numbering over five million men, Britain's army in the First World War was the biggest in the country's history. Remarkably, nearly half those men who served in it were volunteers. 2,466,719 men enlisted between August 1914 and December 1915, many in response to the appeals of the Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener, by then a natural hero. Peter Simkins describes how Kitchener's New Armies were raised and reviews the main political, economic and social effects of the recruiting campaign. He examines the experiences and impressions of the officers and men who made up the New Armies. As well as analysing their motives for enlisting, he explores how they were fed, housed, equipped and trained before they set off for active service abroad. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, ranging from government papers to the diaries and letters of individual soldiers, he questions long-held assumptions about the 'rush to the colours' and the nature of patriotism in 1914. The book will be of interest not only to those studying social, political and economic history, but also to general readers who wish to know more about the story of Britain's citizen soldiers in the Great War
The First World War : the war to end all wars by Peter Simkins( Book )

18 editions published between 2003 and 2014 in English and Italian and held by 300 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Nearly a century ago Europe, the Middle East and Africa were ravaged by war, it was the first truly global conflict. Raging for over four years across tortured landscapes and characterized by horrific casualty rates, brutality and the iconic trenches gouged out of the landscape, the First World War changed warfare forever. The mass slaughter on battlefields such as the Somme, Ypres and Verdun were on a scale previously thought impossible. This book expores this most savage of conflicts, tracing the war from the much heralded battles on the Western Front through to the forgotten clashes in the East and Africa." -- Back cover
From the Somme to victory : the British Army's experience on the Western Front, 1916-1918 by Peter Simkins( )

7 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 192 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Peter Simkins has established a reputation over the last forty years as one of the most original and stimulating historians of the First World War. He has made a major contribution to the debate about the performance of the British Army on the Western Front. This collection of his most perceptive and challenging essays, which concentrates on British operations in France between 1916 and 1918, shows that this reputation is richly deserved. He focuses on key aspects of the army's performance in battle, from the first day of the Somme to the Hundred Days, and gives a fascinating insight into the developing theory and practice of the army as it struggled to find a way to break through the German line. His rigorous analysis undermines some of the common assumptions - and the myths - that still cling to the history of these British battles

Command and morale : the British army on the Western Front, 1914-1918 by Gary Sheffield( Book )

4 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gary Sheffield is one of the most versatile and stimulating of military historians at work today. For 25 years, in a series of perceptive books and articles, he has examined the First World War from many angles - from the point of view of the politicians and the high command through to the junior officers and other ranks in the front line. Morale and Command presents in a single volume a range of his shorter work, and it shows his scholarship at its best. The range of his writing, the insights he offers and the sometimes controversial conclusions he reaches mean this thought-provoking book will be indispensable reading for all students of the First World War and of modern warfare in general."--Publisher description
