Annotation This volume, prepared in honor of Samuel H. Osipow, a prominent teacher, researcher, author, and pioneer in vocational psychology, deals with significant theoretical and practical issues in the field of vocational psychology. As a state-of-the-art review of contemporary models of vocational psychology, this book will provide current and up-to-date coverage of the topics. It will also contain in-depth reviews of models of vocational psychology by leading scholars, including career decision making models, career self-efficacy, occupational stress, cross-cultural assessment of interests, and career counseling services within university systems. A major theme that runs throughout all chapters is the concept of change. This unifying theme is fitting since the authors have prepared their chapters in honor of Osipow, who has significantly changed the field over the last four decades. This volume should serve as a valuable resource for vocational psychology researchers, counseling graduate students, and career counselors. In addition to being a professional text, it should also be a useful supplement text for career development and career counseling courses in graduate programs of counseling, counseling psychology, and industrial/organizational psychology

Handbook of career development : international perspectives by Gideon Arulmani( )

12 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is focused on work, occupation and career development: themes that are fundamental to a wide range of human activities and relevant across all cultures. Yet theorizing and model building about this most ubiquitous of human activities from international perspectives have not been vigorous. An examination of the literature pertaining to career development, counseling and guidance that has developed over the last fifty years reveals theorizing and model building have been largely dominated by Western epistemologies, some of the largest workforces in the world are in the developing world. Career guidance is rapidly emerging as a strongly felt need in these contexts. If more relevant models are to be developed, frameworks from other cultures and economies must be recognized as providing constructs that would offer a deeper understanding of career development. This does not mean that existing ideas are to be discarded. Instead, an integrative approach that blends universal principles with particular needs could offer a framework for theorizing, research and practice that has wider relevance. The central objective of this handbook is to draw the wisdom and experiences of different cultures together to consider both universal and specific principles for career guidance and counseling that are socially and economically relevant to contemporary challenges and issues. This book is focused on extending existing concepts to broader contexts as well as introducing new concepts relevant to the discipline of career guidance and counseling

Occupational health disparities : improving the well-being of ethnic and racial minority workers by Frederick T. L Leong( )

11 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 405 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Racial and ethnic minority groups in the workforce are prone to higher rates of work-related diseases, injuries, and psychological distress than members of the dominant group. The severity and types of hazards minorities face are also very different because they may work in more physically demanding, labor-intensive jobs that often do not provide full benefits or enough income to access proper health care. Fortunately, the burgeoning field of occupational health psychology (OHP) is ideally positioned to address these disparities and improve conditions for minority workers. To fully understand the needs of racial and ethnic minorities, however, OHP requires a multicultural perspective. This book gathers experts in OHP and multicultural psychology to establish an evidence-based framework that will promote advancements in policy, research, and interventions, all of which are needed to reduce occupational health disparities (OHDs). Chapters review the disparities that Latinos, African Americans, and Asian Americans face in a variety of industries, including agriculture, transportation, construction, nursing, and information technology. They also explore a wide array of issues that impact and are impacted by OHDs, such as socioeconomic status; education; discriminatory and hostile work environments; lack of effective safety training; language proficiency; and other cultural, community, and organizational factors. -- Provided by publisher
Evidence-based psychological practice with ethnic minorities : culturally informed research and clinical strategies by Nolan W. S Zane( )

11 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mental health practitioners are most effective when their services respond to the client's lifestyle, cultural and linguistic heritage, and life circumstances. Thus, an essential component of evidence-based psychological practice (EBPP) is attending to the ethnocultural background of the client. A significant challenge in using EBPP to guide treatment interventions with ethnic minority clients is that relatively little applicable research has been conducted, especially research that satisfies rigorous methodological criteria. In this book, experts in the field of ethnic minority mental health treatment discuss why research on culturally informed EBPP has not made more progress and suggest tangible strategies for conducting more meaningful and impactful studies in this area. The chapters address measurement issues such as test translation and adaptation, and research design issues such as meta-analytic strategies and mixed-method approaches. Inspiring examples show how EBPP can be tailored to meet the specific needs of ethnic minorities. This volume is an important step in reducing disparities and promoting effective mental health treatment for underserved populations"--Publicity materials. Sponsored by the International Testing Commission, The ITC International Handbook of Testing and Assessment is dedicated to the advancement of theory, research, and practice in the area of international testing and assessment in psychology, education, counseling, organizational behavior, human resource management, and related disciplines. Bringing together international contributors from a range of disciplines, each chapter provides a review of testing and assessment research and practices around the world as well as a discussion of conceptual and methodological challenges to help advance the field. As The ITC International Handbook of Testing and Assessment, it also provides a historical perspective of international testing, the development of the ITC, and its guidelines. Recognizing that cultural and international contexts are essential to a true and accurate psychology, the authors describe how cultural, economic, political, and social factors in different countries frame the science and practice of testing and assessment. The ITC International Handbook of Testing and Assessment is a must-have resource for testing professionals and graduate students from psychology and related disciplines."--
